Carnac - host venue for 7th World Championships in 2016 Bookmark and Share

The standard of the bid documents from the national class associations and host clubs has been exceptionally high and we would like to thank all the teams for taking part in this process of applying to host our classes World Championships.

We are very pleased to announce Carnac on the west coast of Brittany in France as the host venue for our 7th World Championships.

Following a bid process, the class’s international secretary received 17 international committee member votes from 8 countries, selecting this prestigious venue against strong bids from other European venues.

Carnac has an historical connection with the class, as it was on the Quiberon Bay in 2000 that World Sailing gathered the designs that had entered their 1999 high performance single handed class competition to assess them as a potential new Olympic class.

Joachim Harpprecht had put pen to paper or should I say mouse to CAD program to come up with this revolutionary design and worked with Tim Tavinor and Paul Manning of Devoti Sailing shortly before they built Sir Ben Ainslie’s legendary Finn ‘Rita’ the boat that won 3 consecutive Olympic Gold medals and Ovington Boats, who were also heavily involved in the Olympic class scene with the 49er as well as other international classes such as the 505 and Int. 14, so there is a bit of pedigree there too…

The event was independently covered by Voiles & Voilers and it is interesting to remind yourself of the early history of the class which can be read here .
