Earn yourself vouchers to spend with Ovington Boats…

I am sure there are many among us that capsize in ‘normal’ conditions but has it been captured on video? As part of our on-going compliance with the European recreational craft directive (that little sticker on your transom with the CE mark) we need to conduct this test. Just like you have been framed, you will get £250 (in Ovi vouchers) for the winning video that can actually be used for this test, all other video’s presented may win a ‘prize’ at the boss’s discretion…Please note video’s may be used for public humiliation!. Redesigning the MUSTO Skiff Sail – Some thoughts on the aerodynamics of alternative designs. About the author of this item ... Sandy Day is a professor of hydrodynamics in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, where he teaches a range of subjects including yacht design and performance prediction. He is currently learning to sail MUSTO GBR111. There’s been some discussion on the forum recently regarding the possibility of a new-look sail for the MUSTO, and a “square top” sail has been suggested as one possibility. This seems to have been driven by a number of factors, including the desire to make the boat more modern looking, but also to make the sail more efficient. One important question is whether there could be any obvious aerodynamic benefit which might result from a re-design if the spars and the sail area stay the same. Read more >>>

Update on current plans for the testing and development of a new rig Following the class skippers meeting at Carnac the class secretary has had a number of people ask him to update them on what is happening, so we felt it would be worth posting here so everyone can read. The discussion needs to be looked at under three separate titles. At this point it is worth re-stating what Chris Turner, MD of Ovington Boats, said at the meeting. This process will be controlled by the class association and its members. The builder is happy to explore options for the class and develop these at the builders cost but the final decision on which options are selected, including staying with the existing rig will be in the hands of the members. MUSTO Skiffs at Hume Weir Regatta; 29-30 October 2017 :: AUS With mixed feelings, the Victorian MUSTO Skiff fleet set off for the windless Hume Weir, some 350 km north of Melbourne’s CBD for their first regatta of the season. 6 boats turned up at this picturesque location.  Super legend Jon Newman recently relocated to Wangaratta (70kms south and the reason most of us decided to travel north), with freshly born baby George and proud Mum Em in tow,  Richie Robertson, Wayne Bates, big brother Paul Newman joined him from Blairgowrie while Tim Hill and Matt Houvengal made the trip from Port Melbourne.  Somewhat confusingly, Paul had lined up a last minute swap with prior Mustoskiff sailor, Brett Williams, so he could sail Brett’s Javelin two up with his new squeeze Amy.  Brett sailed Paul’s boat for the weekend. The events attracted 14 MUSTO sailors from Switzerland and Germany plus great local hospitality by Nic. The thermal breeze kicked-in a bit late and racing got underway in force 2-4. Frithjof took the lead on the first day with three bullets, Bernd Jahn always well placed and Simon Kerscher sailing fast took a win each. Tactics were a mixed bag, the left side of the course failed to pay as usual so sailors worked their way up the cliffs to the right. Worlds Day 5

Congratulations to Andi Lachenschmid (GER) who is the new ACO MUSTO Skiff World Champion.

As the final day of the ACO MUSTO Skiff World Championships dawned there was great anticipation as the wind forecast looked good and the fleet faced the prospect of 3 or 4 races in a good breeze; and sun …

Given the schedule the fleet loaded up with energy drinks, bananas and baguettes and headed out for the first race in 13 knots.

The fleet got away at the first time of asking under the U flag and was all clear. There was an even split during the first leg but at the windward mark the leaders came in from the starboard layline lead by Dave Poston (GBR), Dan Trotter (GBR) and Tom Wright (GBR).

Worlds Day 4

Andi Lachenschmid (GER) consolidates his lead with a 3,3 & 6 in a tough 3 race day.

Day four of the ACO MUSTO Skiff World Championships dawned with heavy rain and calm sea. The competitors were keen to catch up with the programme but at 11am the weather didn’t want to play so the race officer postponed the start. The rain continued to fall and with it the hope within the fleet, however at 1:30pm the AP was dropped and the fleet headed out in light winds as the race team started to set up a course.

The first start got away after three attempts  in 9 knots of breeze; at the first mark Daniel Trotter (GBR) lead from Jono Shelley (GBR) and Andy Tarboton (RSA); the leading pack headed off to the right of the run with the breeze promptly building to 18 knots … this lead to some of the leaders over standing the gate causing a change in the pack; there were also a couple of capsizes in the leading group as the over stand caused a bit of panic amongst the pack. The breeze held up for the remaining lap and the boats really enjoyed Read more >>>

ACO MUSTO Skiff Worlds, Day 1 from Blue Sky Drones on Vimeo.

Day 1 of the World Championships started with a 10am briefing and a postponement to allow the breeze to build and settle.

MUSTO Skiff at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2016 The class had a very busy show, especially Saturday where at times the stand was packed with visitors ability being assisted by class volunteers. It was especially good to see Iver, Max and Hannes from Germany and I know Max and Hannes were very impressed with the show having not visited previously. The new demo boat has now been taken to Datchet and will be available for sails going forward, so if you are interested in the class, please drop Paul Manning a line to arrange. It's that time of year when the used boats start to get snapped up, 2 UK boats went over the weekend alone, and new boats are being built by Ovington for orders and stock, with 4 or 5 boats looking to join the UK fleet this spring already. Th first EuroCup event at Lac du Der is at the end of the month, followed by the traditional first UK open at Rutland at the beginning of April, so it's time to dust off your sailing gear and check your kit over! I wish you all an enjoyable and successful sailing season and hope to catch up soon.
