MUSTO Skiffs at the GJW Direct Sailjuice Winter Series #4 - Bloody Mary (GBR) Now a familiar bunch of Datchet and Stokes Bay MUSTO sailors - Ben Schooling, Dave Poston, Paul Molesworth, Serega Samus (Datchet), Andrew Rice and Andrew Gould (Stokes Bay) has turned up for yet another, the most popular event of the series - Bloody Mary pursuit race, attracting 274 entries. A scary forecast of  winds gusting over 30 knots and raining for the whole day thankfully didn't materialise in full with wind rarely raising over 20 knots mark and rain clouds somehow missing the competition area. MUSTO Skiffs at the GJW Direct Sailjuice Winter Series #4 - Oxford Blue (GBR) Oxford Blue was the setting for the 1st Sailjuice event in 2016 and as with Grafham the forecast promised 30knts gusts, and rain. The 30knts might not have come but the rain certainly did. The record event entry of 146 boats including 5 MUSTOs launched for the 11am start in a good force 4 and set off downwind for the start. By the time the kite was hoisted and you were settled in the boat it quickly became apparent that there was not a lot of water left, clearly the day was going to call for quick boat handling and keeping our eyes out of the boat. MUSTO Skiffs at the GJW Direct Sailjuice Winter Series #4 - Grafham Grand Prix (GBR) While most people where still tucked up in bed on Monday morning recovering from yet another day of eating and drinking, Dave Poston was up and out de-rigging his boat in the dark with only the help of his head torch, getting ready to set off for the Grafham GP, part of the sail juice winter series. When the sun finally turned the lights on for the rest of the world there were 8 MUSTO skiffs entered into the 35 boat fast handicap fleet all ready and eager to get sailing in the forecasted 18knots with 30knt gusts! Inland Championships 2015 : (GBR)
Following an autumn of one storm after another giving us either blustery or calm conditions for what seems like months, the rescheduled MUSTO Skiff Inland Championships took place at the Datchet Flyer event. The forecast in the run up to the weekend perhaps kept a few people away, or perhaps it was the thought of having to learn a course more complicated than the usual windward leeward affair; nevertheless 17 boats registered. 2015 GBR Circuit Results : (GBR)
The UK MUSTO Skiff Series goes from strength to strength with 78 boats competing this year on the 10 event UK circuit. Although this is down slightly on last years 86, the difference was largely due to the International guys who attended events last year (Iver, Frithjof, Alex, Nicholas and John Archer) - the UK circuit actually had 15 new faces competing this year which is the biggest increase in the last 5 years!

The 2015 Inland Championships has been re-scheduled and will run as part of the Sailjuice Winter Series Datchet Flyer 12th - 13th December

MUSTO SKIFF GERMAN OPEN 2015 : (GER) The Wannsee in Berlin was the stage of the duel between possibly the strongest German sailors in the MUSTOSkiff - Frithjof Schwerdt and Iver Ahlmann. The Potsdamer Yacht Club, Schwerdts home club, hosted this year's German Open. It was, however, Ahlmann, who coped better on the first day with very shifty easterly winds, drizzly rain and cold temperatures - he managed to get bullets in all four races. The second day was dominated by weak easterly winds, some 90 degree shifts, the field getting diced up repeatedly. The right tactics and precise boat and body control were the key to success, Ahlmann and Schwerdt managed two line honours each. Read more >>>

2015 EuroCup series overall The final regatta of the 2015 EuroCup series was held over the weekend of the 17th – 18th on Lake Attersee in Austria. Local sailor Moritz Zieher held off Andi Lachenschmid and Bernd Jahn from Germany to take the event, moving Moritz up to 9th position overall in the EuroCup standings after a strong 5th position at the Garda World Championships. Both Andi and Berndt also moved into the top 20 overall. It was also good to see Felix Luchterhand returning to the class. GBR’s class chairman, Ben Schooling has defended his overall title from GBR’s Alastair Conn and Jono Shelley, with SUI’s ever present Nicolas Duchoud and Roger Oswald, followed by Paul Dijkstra (NED), Alex Greil (SUI), World Champion Bruce Keen in 8th position overall closely followed by Moritz Zieher (AUT) and Stuart Keegan (GBR) rounding out the top 10. Ben won the series opener on Lac du Der in France and then consolidated his year with a win at Kieler Woche and a 2nd place behind Jono Shelley at the 230 boat multi class Lord Birkett Memorial regatta (Northern UK round) on beautiful Ullswater. The series continues to attract over 100 entries from all over Europe, with great racing at some stunning locations! See the result >>>

MUSTO Skiff Open – 10/11th Oct 2015 Castle Cove Sailing Club The MUSTO Skiff’s paired up with the Scorpion’s for the penultimate leg of the UK MUSTO Skiff series at Castle Cove Sailing club in Weymouth. Only 8 boats travelled to join the 3 locals but those who did were glad they made the trip as the harbour was sporting a healthy 15-20kt Easterly and everyone was looking forward to a big day! Mast track update from the technical committee Following on from the Riva World Championship skippers meeting, the class technical committee have agreed with Chris Turner for Ovington Boats to trial an existing mast with a 49er luff track. Ovington Boats will remove the track from an existing mast and fit the new track; this mast will then be trialled locally to them over a period of time to see how it performs. Input from Duncan Hepplewhite of Ovington Boats during the skippers briefing suggested that the 49er track is more durable than the current supplied and we feel this step is necessary to understand what may be causing the continued failures and whether a change in track resolves the problem long-term. The technical committee will report back to the class in the New Year.

2015 Class Survey We have started work on the annual class survey which as members or interested parties is your way of having a say in the class. If you have any questions you would like including in the 2015 survey, please can I ask you to contact your national representative >>>

GBR Circuit
With the memories of Riva fading quickly you may think that is it for the 2015 season - but you'd be wrong! There are still 2 events left on the UK circuit the next one only a few weeks away at the excellent venue Castle Cove in Weymouth. The Ovington Inlands are then in mid November at Grafham. The UK series is all to play for with 12 sailors still in with a chance of winning the 2015 circuit. Ben Schooling still leads but Dave Poston has closed the gap after a podium position at the Datchet open and Jono Shelley has moved into 4th after winning the Scottish open at Channonry behind Dan Kilsby in 3rd. I look forward to seeing you at the remaining events to round off a fantastic season.

ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Fraglia Vela Riva (Lake Garda, Italy)

19th September 2015 :: Worlds Day 5
The final day of the ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships dawned with the sun shining and great expectations from the competitors that the thermal south wind would kick in to give a grandstand finish to the event. However, the wind gods of Garda had other ideas and regardless of the heat the north wind continued to prevail. After a short delay Race 10 was started in 7 knots of north breeze. Former World Champion Richard Stenhouse pulled off a text book port end start crossing the fleet and leading the fleet to the left.
Opinions were split on the beat as to the best strategy but as the sun continued to shine the north wind shut down and the race team abandoned the race; special mention to John Reekie (GBR) who was leading at the time. Read more and see the video >>>

18th September 2015 :: Worlds Day 4
Sailors at the ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships shook off the puddles in their covers from the storms of the lay day as the sun arrived and dried out the previous day’s rain. Almost to order the sun heated up the North Mountains creating the south wind allowing the sailors an easy sail to the start line. Although the south wind had arrived the strength stabilised around the 13 – 14 knot with gusts rolling down the lake creating many opportunities for place changing. Read more >>>

17th September 2015 :: Lay Day
As the racing programme is on shedule today is was a layday here in Riva. This means that the Gala dinner was thoroughly enjoyed by the sailors and their guests and the party continued long into the small hours. MUSTO Skiff sailors chose a range of relaxation activities on the lay day; some opted for further adrenaline fueled activities such as downhill mounting biking, paragliding and via ferrata outings; whilst others enjoyed day tripping around the lake or just simply nursing a hang over. 16th September 2015 :: Worlds Day 2
Sailors at the ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships opened their curtains as the church bells chimed to a view of rain and no wind … it didn’t look good… However only one thing is for certain in Riva and that is the weather can change in a very short time. Today the sailors enjoyed 3 races held in an 8 to 14 knot northerly breeze. The reversal of wind direction and the slightly lighter breezes from the first day gave the sailors a new challenge that suited some and no so others. Read more >>>

15th September 2015 :: Worlds Day 1
The ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships started today in 12 – 16 knots of southerly wind. With all measurement completed, thanks to a very efficient measurement team headed by class International Measurer Chris Henderson, the fleet left Riva for a 13:00 start and after a short postponement racing got underway. Following 2 general recalls the fleet got away on the third time of asking with the majority of the heading for the cliffs while some pressed on towards the left on starboard. Read more >>>

13th September 2015 :: Pre-Worlds Day 2
The second day of the Pre-worlds regatta for the ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships started today in a light northerly breeze of 6-8 knots. The fleet were a little sluggish off the shore after the sunny windy races of the previous day as the race track looked a little less inviting. After a short postponement the fleet started cleanly first time … the fleet split off the start with series leader Richie Robertson (AUS) starting at the committee boat and tacked off to the middle of the lake with a group whilst the bulk of the fleet headed left towards the cliffs. .

12th September 2015 :: Pre-Worlds Day 1
The first day of the Pre-worlds regatta for the ACO 6th MUSTO Skiff World Championships started today in classic Garda Ora winds with sunshine and 15-18 knot southerly winds. The fleet launched in light winds under instruction of the race team on the anticipation of the arrival of the famous thermal Garda winds and as the fleet worked its way towards the start line the breeze gradually built to a steady 15 – 18 knots with greater wind pressure to be found towards the cliffs. The fleet got away cleanly on the first start with those with good starts quickly choosing to head towards the right hand side cliffs to pick up the stronger pressure. Read more >>>

11th September 2015 :: Measurement and Registration

MUSTO Skiff Open at Datchet: 29/30 August 2015 : (GBR) 12 plucky MUSTOs contended the Datchet open with a forecast that barely went above 5 knots, and on arrival even 5 knots was looking optimistic. However after a short delay the breeze came in at 5-8 knots and racing got underway. Looking around and taking the shifts was key - the wind slowly went right, favouring the right side of the course, but this wasn't a guaranteed gain! George Hand rounded the first mark in the lead of Race 1 followed by Stuart Keegan, Serega Samus and Dave Poston. Dave gybe set on the first downwind to come out in front, but George and Stuart passed him again upwind. Stuart and George fought it out for the lead, place changing several times, with George taking the bullet followed by Stuart and Dave. Read more >>>

Eurocup in good weather in Kristiansand, Norway As a newcomer in MUSTO Skiff, I had the pleasure of participating in my first event here in Kristiansand 23. – 24. August. Christianssands sailing club (CSF) arranged their Race Weekend. The weather was perfect, warm and sunny.  The forecast for wind was good – Saturday about 12 knots and Sunday about 20 knots, both days easterly.  In Kristiansand, this means variations in strength and direction – difficult conditions for a newbie like me. A busy weekend in Norway and Switzerland With two events at opposite ends of Europe this weekend, it is hard to decide which is a more beautiful place to go sailing, Lake Silvaplana just outside St. Moritz in Switzerland or Chritiansand in Norway, but either way I’m sure everyone had an enjoyable time! With 8 events now completed, the UK class chairman, Ben Schooling, holds the overall lead from countryman Alastair Conn and Switzerland’s finest Roger Oswald and Nicolas Duchoud followed by a list of Brit’s, Dutch, Swiss, Norwegian, German, Spanish and Russian sailors filling the top 20. When I add in the entry for Riva, this year will easily beat the previous record for the series and I hope everyone is enjoying the idea of the EuroCup. Looking forward to seeing you all in Riva.

MUSTO Skiffs at Travemünder Woche & Grömitz Supercup :: GER Nicolas Duchoud reports on his holidays in Northern Germany My company holidays made me go in the high north-east of Germany this year. The combination of "Grömitz Supercup" and "Travemünde week" lay nicely on my holidays. So I took the long trip of approx. 1000 km on myself. If you go from Switzerland over Bregenz then you are able to spend the remaining distance (99%) on the A7. On the SatNavi stands "in 876 km turn right" then. :o) Arrived at Grömitz I went immediately on the water and it was started after an unnecessary start postponement. After three runs the day’s races has been closed due to too much wind. It is amazing how different the countries are, in Australia we have run out in each case only from 22kn upwards. Read more >>>

MUSTO Skiff Product Evolution : Updated Over the years a number of minor changes have been made to the standard MUSTO Skiff to address niggles that have been noted by the owners over the years. Fortunately the class and the builder have always worked well together and these problems have been addressed in the standard boat gradually improving the product for everyone as time goes by ... However, it has been brought to our attention via the recent survey (by Neil Upton-Brown, thanks Neil) that if you have an older boat and sail in a remote location that you may not have been aware of some of these changes that could improve your own boat. Ullswater Euro Cup at the Lord Birkett On the 4th and 5th July a record breaking fleet of over 230 boats gathered to compete at the 53rd Lord Birkett at Ullswater Sailing Club. In amongst them was a keen fleet of MUSTO Skiff sailors who were competing for Northern Euro Cup points. Sailors arrived on Saturday to lots of rain and no wind however by the 1pm start time the wind had filled in as promised and the sun was shining. After a general recall the race got underway with Jono Shelly showing great upwind speed to lead round the island with Dan Trotter and Ben Schooling in pursuit. Gusty conditions and big wind shifts gave the fleet a hard time, causing many of the fleet to capsize, but Jono demonstrated great boat handling and went on to win the race followed by Dan and Ben. A busy few weeks! No sooner as Kieler Woche has passed the first of two GBR EuroCup rounds was held over the weekend 4th – 5th on stunning Ullswater as part of the 53rd running of the annual Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy. From the event website “One of the most spectacular sailing events in the North (of England), the Birkett was rated number eight in the top ‘must do’ sailing regattas by Yachts and Yachting magazine. The unique race was first sailed in 1963 to commemorate the successful defence by Lord Norman Birkett of the right of public access to Ullswater which was threatened with reservoir status” with an amazing record entry of 230 boats. GER EuroCup Leg Venue: Kieler Yacht-Club 21 MUSTO Skiffs competed in Kiel Woche 2015 from the 25th-28th June. We were treated to first class race management, amazing organisation on and off the water and fantastic German hospitality. ACO generously offered free accommodation to all MUSTO Skiff sailors and their families which made the event even more affordable for the travelling competitors from six nations. Thursday dawned with a light offshore breeze. The MUSTO fleet were sharing the closest course with the RS800s which ensured a short sail out to the race area. Ben Schooling (GBR) signalled his intent by scoring a 1, 2, 1 in the shifty breeze to lead the fleet. Iver Ahlmann (GER) posted a 2, 1, 5 to just squeeze out the consistent Alistair Conn (GBR) 3, 3, 3. After the racing the fleet enjoyed the carnival atmosphere by knocking back a few (!) 1 euro beers, brätwurst and ice cream! Read more >>>

EuroCup after 3 events With three events sailed and the Dutch regatta postponed to later in the year, there are almost as many countries in the top 5 as there are competitors! That’s the great thing about the EuroCup, it attracts sailors from all over Europe to compete. The Spanish regatta had Philippe Koch travelling from Switzerland but not to be beaten, Yaroslav Petrov made the drive from the Black Sea to Kieler Woche (see the road trip story for more detail). As you would expect from Kiel the organisation of the worlds biggest sailing event means it ran as well as you could imagine and sitting at home watching the SAP tracking and live race coverage was great fun! The 4th – 5th July is the UK round on Ullswater for the Lord Birkett Trophy and the weather is looking hot, this is followed on the 9th – 12th July for the UK Nationals Championships at Paignton Sailing Club on Torbay before travelling to Norway for the Kristiansand round 22nd – 23rd August and the Swiss round on Lake Silvaplana over the same weekend. What's your road trip? Part of running a World Championships is helping all those sailors coming from different parts of the World to get to and from their regatta. I say 'their regatta' because although it is of course a class event, everyone has individual stories and the decision as to whether to compete is sometimes driven by how much hassle you want in order to go to and from the venue. Some of the lucky ones simply meet up with a booked multi-boat trailer load their boat, fly to the nearest airport, arrive at the venue and their boat is there. For some, even this sounds like hassle, but its all part of the experience and, in this case, if you haven't been to Lake Garda to sail a skiff, what have you been missing! Race Report Stone Sailing Club Open 2015 : (GBR) Arriving bright and breezy at Stone Sailing Club we were welcomed by the ever present Neil Fulcher and his excellent team but unfortunately the breezy bit was too breezy, often over 30knots, so the fleet set to a bit of bimbling and socialising with newbie to the class Jack Grogan in his new boat being the centre of attention and getting a free helping hand to set his boat up. After a long postponement the wind still wasn't dropping that much, so Neil made the wise decision to cancel racing for the day and go for 5 shorter races in what looked like a great Sunday forecast. MUSTO Skiff Stokes Bay Open Report 25 - 26 April 2015: (GBR) With weather forecasts as random as Ronnie O’Sullivan’s recent behaviour 24 optimistic MUSTO Skiff sailors convened at Stokes Bay Sailing Club for their open on 25 – 26 April. The first race started in a light breeze from a Westerly direction with Mike Palfreman executing a timely port end flyer to cross the fleet and gain an early lead. Andy Rice led briefly at the windward mark before Palfreman regained the lead on the second beat and then pulled away to take a relatively comfortable win with Ben Schooling putting a cheeky move on Bruce Keen to sneak into second at the finish. The second race was most notable for Richard Pelly’s magnificent performance, perhaps most notably by his uncharactaristic excellent start. Once the difficult bit was out of the way he merrily sailed off with the bullet being chased (distantly) by fellow Stokes Bay members Keen and George Hand. With speculation rife from a hastily formed kangaroo court that Bruce’s new boat might never win a race the wind swung to the South and increased.  Naturally Keen was never headed and followed home by newcomer Dan Kilsby who in turn was closely pursued by Schooling. Report Skiffania Diessen Germany Ammersee lake 25./26.04.15 MUSTOskiff With Family my sailing time is limited. So I was very excited that my family accepted a sailing weekend at the lovely Bavarian Ammersee lake southwest of Munich. I made a nice package of activities like steam boat riding, museum visits, visit a blacksmith for knives or have a look in a tin figure shop and museum. Due to not so good weather predictions I went on my own. No traffic on the German Autobahn, but the skippers meeting at 9 was still to early. The Club facilities of DSC gave easy room all the participating classes with 10*49er, 4*i14, 18 Moths and the 9 out of 11 MUSTOs. Read more >>>>Winners

Race Report Rutland 2015 : (GBR) Undeterred by a forecast in red and purple, a band of MUSTO Skiff sailors arrived at Rutland Sailing club on Saturday with more hope than expectation. Coaching have always been part of the concept between thursday and saturday morning, and several GBR MUSTO Skiff performers have often been part of the coaching team. Guess it will be the case this year... Central location for all the European skiff sailors wanting to have true international skiff racing and the real good atmosphere it create. ACO 5th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Mounts Bay Sailing Club :Day 5 Report - Final Standings Today it was the last day of the World Championships. We already had a winner, so “It was on” for the rest of the top 10. Our prediction of changes was wrong, the regatta had already shown us the best sailors on the top. Marcus and Thor kept their second and third position and will be together with Jon Newman on the stage. Report >>>

ACO 5th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Mounts Bay Sailing Club :Day 4 Report Today it was it was big Thursday. Jon Newman got 3 first and is already World Champion with 2 races to go. In the top ten it is still extremely excited!! Between number 2 and number 7 there’s only 13 points difference. So another big day to go. Today is also the ACO sponsor day. ACO invited customers to come over, to have a look at our sailors and sail by themselves as well. I saw them on the water and their having great fun. Report >>>

ACO 5th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Mounts Bay Sailing Club :Day 3 Report Big Wednesday, was not as big as promised. You better call it Weak Wednesday. What suposed to be a big day of wind, was a big day of waiting, wind shifting, course changes and a lot marks where pulled up and down. A big day for Jon Newman as well, he finished two times in the first position and is confirming his grip on the title. Report >>>

ACO 5th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Mounts Bay Sailing Club :Day 2 Report The second day started with discussions about the weather. There were 2 forecast, one said it’s going to blow like a normal sea breeze, the other said it wasn’t. In the end of the day, both were right. It started with a +20 knots race, then a 9 knots race and then about 15 knots rising to 20 in the end. So a good day for the allround sailors. Ian Renilson from the UK seems to be a good all-rounder, he improved from 10th place to 2nd overall. Jon Newman from Australia is still in the front and Paul Dijkstra from the Netherlands has confirmed his 3th place. Report >>>

ACO 5th MUSTO Skiff Worlds at Mounts Bay Sailing Club :Day 1 Report Flat water like promised, not the big winds as some feared but still wind. Good conditions for the sailors to start the Worlds. All boats were able to compete and have fun. The wind was a bit shifty and around 8 to 12 knots. The brothers Newman did a pretty good job and ended as first and second overall. With 5 boats from Australia and 5 from overseas in the top 10, it’s going to be interesting for the rest of the week. The day started with almost no wind and about 40 (degrees) so really hot. The race committee decided to put up AP for a while, waiting for the sea breeze to come in. Liters of water went into the sailors, as they were sweating while doing nothing.

Australian Nationals 2015 - Jon Newman Australian Champion again! The day that started with no wind and ended with loads of wind. This was the last day of the Australian Nationals. Current Australian Champion Jon Newman is the winner again. A good job done by the race committee today. The race committee decided to sail on Melville Water West, because the World Championship will be held there as well. So it started with a chill-out session on shore. Waiting for the Tornados to finish their racing and waiting for the sea breeze coming in. So a good moment for the sailors to fix or clean their boats and discuss tactics. Read more >>>

Spannish Fleet Development into 2015 (ESP) During 2014 the Spanish MUSTO Skiff fleet has grown in number of boats and clubs. Before this year the only fleet of MUSTO Skiffs in Spain owned by sailors was that of Club Nàutic Arenal in Majorca. Owing to the enthusiasm and effort of Justo Martínez the fleet from Arenal is currently the largest one in Spain with eight boats. However, the situation in the peninsular Spain before 2014 was quite different with just a few isolated boats, most of them not actively sailed or simply abandoned. A stroke of serendipity made that two boats arrived almost simultaneously to Arenys de Mar (20 nm NE of Barcelona) during the first months of 2014. read more >>>

First day of the Australian Nationals 2015 Fantastic weather, flat water and wind building up during the day. That where the ingredients for a fantastic first day out on the water. There were a lot capsizes but also a lot of flying downwind moments for the guys. Today was the first day of the Australian Nationals, the warm up for the Worlds starting on Monday. You could say it’s a training for the guys, but they we’re all very serious about it. It was a good day starting with about 15 knots of wind and the wind was building up to about 20 knots gusting 25 sometimes. Read more >>>
