we have a proble with Rutland, the website has the day sailing fees
at £18 per weekend but the 2012 prices are now £35 for the weekend.
That now is a just under 100% rise, and puts Rutland with the rest of the clubs at
£20 a day for you to visit, Rutland is full at the moment with training, 30 toppers
then next weekend all the 29 er are down as well. Rutland looks great at the
moment but we have to book well in advance to get a room and a rib.
The extra cost of the day sailing fee would ,make the cost very high for some driving
from other clubs, winter membership might work for some. We wil have to recost and
see if its still on

I think that £12 per day to sail at Rutland would not work in 2012 as why would
you join, it might be good for the club but not for us to put on training, not a dig at
the club, done on phone sorry about layout

Back home now. we are still ON for next weekend, the sailors still want the training and Ian has got a rib now, we will have to use the wet bar/ or bar if not in kit to brief and at night we have the main bar. I Will be their early and start off with the rig setup and a look at the boats.
If you could text or email me with any points you want to cover, or post on here. Over the next few days I will post a few words to help anyone new to our training on how to get the best out of it, as I am not a coach, please read or ignore it as you wish, this is a forum and I aim to produce a good information sheet using information from this forum for pre training.
http://www.rya.org.uk/sitecollectiondoc ... t%20V4.pdf
please take a look a very quick look at this, then follow a few tips from me, then Ian can put you right on the latest training ways.

1 The main point of training is to change to a better method or push the corners, if you can gybe in a force5 then thats great, but to gybe in a force six you may have to change all your moves or method and start again in a force 4-5 in a different way, to me the person coming back to shore dry is not trying very hard and playing safe, you should tip over and get wet, push the corners and have fun.

2 Once you tip it in and get wet you are out of sink with the rest of the fleet, you need to move to the next start area of the training format and wait to join in the waiting format, this is when the last 5 mins training has ended you should all group like little ducks, the best person at the last event should reach very slowly back and forth, all other boats should be two boats behind him in his wake, as the last boat gets to the area you should have ten boats in line on a reach two boats apart all following the path of the first boat that will follow the training rib. if you are having a very bad day you can skip the next event and wait at the next area downwind if you are doing upwind downwind starts. Have a rest instead of playing catch up.

3 The bigest problem is not knowing the format, if after the 35 mins in the class room or you are late also most will only grasp half of the format and it changes somtimes, as number 2 if you all fall into the duck format the rib can come along side and shout the next event, it all works if you go the same way very slowly in a line on a reach two boats apart, each in the wake of the boat in front.

4 The figure of eight or the gybe without the kite up, I had some training last week, I was told that my gybe is wrong and here is one take on what you should try and do. to be changed if not correct.
When you gybe, starting on port tack, you should move you weight over to the boom side of the boat before the boom comes across, your weight will be held by the rudder movement and the boat moving/turning right. now this sounds so easy, wrong, just remember what you should be doing not just try and gybe and follow, you can spend days gybing but it what you should be doing is the point not the gybe or if you get wet. you are going to get wet or you are playing safe again.

5 The Tack, the point of this is to get better, you can tack six different ways but the common thing is speed and flat. you need to head as you come in, you can do this two ways, very quickly move in as you head up keeping 80% of your speed then stop turning for a second while you get the main sheet and balance and slowly go round head to wind and come out with the boat 3dec to windward with the main half way out or head up and go round at a constant rate. the hard bit is, to head up you need to come in with confidence, new MPS sailors move in without heading up, WRONG you will slow and you speed will drop like a stone.
I will put a links to the forum to help you with the correct way to sail this boat, I will work on this help sheet.

Its changed again in the last hour, 9 deg c Saturday and 10 dec c Sunday now, force 4 on both days now, its still early to take any notice yet, the temp is not far out with windguru but winds can change the day before an event.
Looks perfect now for a great blast, hope it drops for the training as we need a nice force 2-3 for that.
At Rutland with a north/west wind or a west direction wind you can get afloat without any problems, the shore faces north and the wind is constant, the temperature would be more of a problem in Jan, it looks to go warm again.
gone windy again this am for Sat

You can always do stuff regardless of the weather ... land drills and boat pimping are good fall backs ...

You could even cover "how to get your worlds entry done" ... it's very easy just complete on-line :D

Warm 11 deg c Saturday and 5 dec c Sunday now, force 4 on Saturday, its still early to take any notice of windguru yet, the temp is not far out with windguru but winds can change the day before an event.
Looks perfect now for a great blast on Saturday for some, not very good for training if you are rusty after xmas, this was the wind I went out a few weeks ago, just after the new year, hard work after the xmas excess but good fun. I sailed in the same wind before xmas and it was very easy before the xmas excess, They need to put a health warning on xmas  lot 5 lbs over two day sailing after the new year, :D no gym membership this year, just go sailing instead

Hi Everyone

Sorry for the late reply re coaching

Start time is 10.30 Saturday and 10.00 on Sunday. I would like you to be changed into your sailing kit by then with your boat rigged but with the sails down. If the weather is bad just wrap up warm with you harness as we will be doing shore drills and rig set up.

If we sail I will be looking at:

Boat handerling
Starting
Boat speed
Rig set up

If there is anything else you would like me to look at please speak up.

I will do a video de-breaf after sailing both days. If you would like a copy of the footage please bring a USB stick or your lap-top and I Down load the video for you.

The Price will be £25/day (payable to me) and non Rutland members will have to pay the sailing fee of £20/day or £35 for the weekend (they still have the old lower rates on the website so maybe you could barter them down on the day) they have allowed us to leave boats at the club for free if you are staying until the Tiger Trophy.

If you have any questions please ring or email me

Cheers

Hi Guys

From today’s emails and contacts if we put the training back a week we are going to be struggling for people.

So I have just been looking at the forecasts for this weekend and it seems to be getting better than it looked yesterday.

Wind guru is saying 17knots gusting 35 on sat and 18 gusting 33 on the Sunday

BBC weather is saying for Oakham is saying 18MPH

Weatheronline is saying force 5 gusting 37MPH

…ie it could be anything!

It is westerly so we would get some shelter if we headed to the left of the club. I am happy to go ahead with the training as I am sure we would go sailing at least one of the days.

If we can’t get sailing all the time we can spend time doing Shore drills (practice Tacks, gybes and hoists) - doing shore drills if very good to practice as it allows you to think about and dissect every part of the manoeuvre, with out the worry of capsize! We can look at boat set up and rig setting, spending some time getting the right settings for each size of person.

I would also be happy to run through a Venue guide for Weymouth bay. This will be a real help for anyone looking into going to the worlds.

Another plus point of not sailing on one of the days is we will save £100 rib hire charge so everyone will get £10 off the day rate!

If I don’t hear from you I’ll assume you are still coming and see you there at 1030!

Cheers

Ian

I have to say that as you come into the carpark of rutland with the wind from the west it looks very windy up the lake, I think their must be a shallow point underwater that gives big waves as you look up the lake, as you come down with the kite up the waves get bigger before the club then the water stayes the same or slightly less waves as you go past the club, wind from the west direction.
The hardest part of sailing the Musto is getting out and back in, at Rutland in this wind direction it is very easy, an onshore wind or at sea is twice as hard as Rutland in a westerly.
It is also a lot harder to sail under the bank as well, it look less wind but you need better boat handling in the disturbed wind, the waves make it look very windy upwind but the wind is constant so less stress on the boat and us the poor sailor.
The fun point sailing downwind in this waves is you need to avoid running into the back of the wave in front, the best place for this is upwind of the car park?
At Rutland last weekend the MPS sailors stay ashore in a 9mph wind, Stens training a few years back was great fun in a force 4-5, no gaps in the startine in the strong wind.
see you at Rutland, please bring your safty knife or roosters fish knife abd a marker pen black.

Sorry popeye we did try as per emails flying around, it just goes to show how many people work weekends now. it is a long way to come and i know how you feel, I have to drive 167 miles to Stokes Bay, the drive home on Sunday after 6 hours at sea is a long one. you still have the Stokes Bay training in april, Stokes Bay has confirmed the date.
Keep you eyes on the forcast, it only has to drop a bit for a purfect event.
Have a great time in you Musto

The wind has gone up again 21mph Sat and 22 on Sunday on windguru. on metweb it has it 21mpg gusting 41 mph saturday and sunday 22 mph gusting 41.
We are sorry to mess you all around but we will try for next weekend 28th/29th now, we have no idea if the weather is correct but the above forecast is not good for the sailors to train in with some of the group with their names down.

The fall in numbers are also a factor, It may be down to me posting too much on the topic of wind that have put people off so I will keep away from posting too much now, the training has works well over the years without all my posts.
Thanks
Chris
