Northern Area Events

It is that time of year when we plan for next. The Northern Area events have not been very well supported this year and I would like to find out what people want.
Currently there are 5 events, with 3 to count, included in this are the Nationals and the inlands. This year the other 3 events were Rutland, Bassenthwaite and Derwent.
Is this what people want?

In order to raise the profile of the Northern Areas as a series I feel it probably needs some changes. Generally I feel that open meeting attendance numbers are falling perhaps due to increased fuel costs, pressure of working weekends etc.
Looking at the membership I would say that most Northern MPS sailors are in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Cumbria.
If we then restrict the events to a say 2 hour drive from this area, and also make the events with 2 races Saturday and 3 Sunday with 3 to count, so if you cannot do Saturday it is possible to still compete on the Sunday.... or alternatively just Sunday?

This would then mean the events would be restricted to an area which includes Filey, Sunderland, South Shields, Derwent, Kielder, Ullswater, Bassenthwaite, North Berwick? I have probably missed somewhere so apologies to them!

I would really like some feedback from Northern Sailors so we can plan for next year.

Are there multi fleet regattas that you can hook into John?

Rick
most of the ones listed here are multi fleet regattas.
We should aim to get an even proportion of inland and sea events.
The main aim is to try and increase the numbers participating by making it easier and cheaper.

I think this is a great idea, this would fit in with my thinking too, I think we could do with a midland area as well , grafham, Rutland, draycote, oxford, Carsington, pitsfords, any handicap w/l event 100 miles of Birmingham, with the cost of petrol this would give better fleet racing for people like myself.
I also like the idea of club focus days, two days ayear where all the musto would turn up for some fun sailing at normal club racing, racing and help for any new or visiting Musto?
The only problem may be less people going to the main opens but they are missing anyway unless they are the hardcore open type at the moment.
I will do the results if rick gives me access to the web, you make up the rules, 2 jan for Grafham, 28 Jan northampton sail juice, 4-5 feb Rutland tiger, Chew vally 25/26 feb, and so on.
I will start a post for the Midlands area.
Chris

Hello John

Ullswater YC has a few open skiff events in the diary for 2012. There are now 5 musto's in the club - this is hopefully a growing fleet and a number of other niners, 800's etc will be about. It is also the 50th anniversary of the Lord Birkett trophy this year which should be a big event. Would be great for these to be on the musto calendar even if they are not part of the official circuit.

Dates are

Skiff opens - 7/8 april, 23/24 june, 8/9sept
Lord Birkett - 7/8 july

Cheers
Jono

Separately to this I assume the Scottish Skiffs circuit will also be going ahead? Any idea when dates for this will be available?
Many thanks
Jono
