I am putting together the first draft of the Southern Circuit for next year. I have not contacted any of the clubs yet, and no doubt we will have to shuffle dates for tidal considerations, club calendars and so forth.

Knowns
 Dates for the Nationals (Stone 5,6,7 May) and the Worlds (Weymouth 23-30 June)

 Dates for the Dinghy Show (3,4 March)

Unknowns
 Just about everything else - I have assumed fixtures like the 9er events will be on approximately the same date as they were this year, but I have put them in as tentative.

 Whether they will have us again – There are some events that we can bank on – Stokes Bay, Whitstable and others that are a bit less certain – Datchet, Chew, Blackwater?

New Events
I am hopeful of getting an event at Lymington Town sometime in September, joint with the 29ers which would be a good addition.

To all of you...
Is there anywhere else we should consider going? Is there any chance of Thorpe Bay rejoining the calendar? Do we want to do the Tide Ride again or should we ask for a Hayling Island Open Meeting?

The test I would apply to any new event is- Will it be popular enough? (whatever that means to the individual club). Can we piggyback on some existing event - might work well in SW - to join in with other Assym Hcap Regattas.

Thoughts and contributions most welcome.

rather than just sail with the 9er brigade, be good to share some with rs crowd - think more the 800s as lots of them seem keen to get into mustos and more chance to showcase the boat etc.

my thoughts:
inland venues to be keep to the winter
more venues with proper waves and not usual estuary/solent chop.. thinking Eastbourne, Felpham, Torbay, Beer - it's what the boats are designed for
tide ride = recipe for boat repairs
lymington is good but shed loads of tide = probs in light wind

Agree with everything Besty suggests.

Good to go in with other classes/ take advantage of existing asymm handicap events.

For the winter stuff, I of course would suggest (wouldn't I) the class adopts the SailJuice Global Warm-Up as its official travellers series.

And Peaky needs to see if he can still win with the new Rick Perkins approved PY handicap for the MPS!

As for season open meetings, I'd vote for Lyme Regis along with the venues Besty mentions.

And I also think have more informal open meetings/ trainings at Stokes Bay (well, again, I would, wouldn't I!. It's my home club). There are enough boats there already that you know that anything arranged there is going to be a success.

Maybe we should put in the Datchet Purple Pursuit Race in the fixtures for next year. I think it happened first time this year. Any feedback from Datchet sailors?

I like the events in the south as well, torbay is fun to sail at, Oxford would be fun before we grow too big in fleet numbers for the water at Oxford, it is close to the south coast for the Stokes Bay fleet to travel to as well?
Grafham is always good fun just like Rutland, Highcliff might be good and agree with the posts above. Thorpe Bay sounds ok as well, will have more time next year if all goes well.

I agree with having an open at a venue with decent waves. The only problem can be launching (I have watched Laser Radial sailors getting washed on to the beach at Eastbourne and spent a whole weekend watching very big waves breaking on the beach at Beer!).

I will second Felpham, Lyme Regis and Torbay. I have also sailed in big waves at Plymouth, but it is probably a bit far for most, unless it is over a long weekend.

No, to the Tide Ride and Oxford, but Hayling is always good if we can't get one of the venues above.

Probably not much point in having an open in July next year, as I can imagine most will take a break after the worlds. Maybe we try and get an extra open earlier the year, so that everyone can practice before the Nats and Worlds?

I'd certainly support Lyme, the club was very friendly, helpful and efficient during the nationals.

I've given Dan the new 49er UK class secretaries details as they contacted me about holding joint events.

We have on more occasions than I'd like to count tried to hold joint events with RS 700 and RS 800 classes and to be honest it is not a scenario that seems to come to fruition. It might be best to consider other fleets if we wanted to run joint events...

OK - things are starting to shape up.

Bruce - the extra early season event is sorted - we are going to Stone SC on the first May Bank Holiday for the Nationals.

So before the Worlds we have...
Chew, Rutland, Stokes, Stone, Whitstable and probably Datchet.

After the Worlds is trickier... I think as Bruce says that any open meeting in July is unlikely to attract a big entry, although maybe sonething towards the end may work.

August is normally a no-go area

Grafham Inlands are not until Nov 17/18 - which means there is the possibility of doing something in October.

I wonder if you want to have a lay period following the Worlds, you might find people are a bit burned out.
Or maybe have some kind of fun event. Slalom course against the clock or similar?

An event in October would be good...

You could always have a small open at Stokes Bay in July, maybe a fun event to join in the fleet racing, with the pub the main focus on Saturday night. you would have a fleet without any trouble
