As for the forcast this weekend at Stokes bay, I have sailed in the snow this time of year in the past so will not moan at sunshine and summer temperatures with a great crowd of sailors with a great view of the solent, still looks like a great weekend to me.
See you on Saturday

Chris, All,

Tides at Stokes Bay aren't that tricky - there are no large underwater features that disturb the flow so the charts don't really help, however, there is a chart table upstairs in the clubhouse for the curious. The Bay gets progressively deeper towards the main channel and the tide is stronger in deeper water. Depending on wind direction we will hopefully be sailing a fair distance offshore, which reduces the tidal gradient across the course.

What will help is an appreciation of the timing. HW on Sat is 1531 (BST). It is a Neap Tide and won't be anywhere near as strong as last week.

When we launch and at the start of the first race (1230) the tidal stream will be heading East (towards Portsmouth). It starts to turn 2 and half hours before HW and it turns inshore first. So from 1300 onwards it should go slackpants and then start flowing towards the West. It will probably take between 30 - 45 minutes for the main channel to turn. It will then flow West (towards Southampton) for the rest of the afternoon.

On Sunday HW is at 1622 BST. When we launch the tide will be flowing East and won't change until 1400ish (there is a good chance we will have finished by then).

When you get out onto the race course find a buoy and watch the flow around it, and practise approaching it to see how it affects your laylines. During the races use transits to judge how your course to the next buoy is being affected.

Dan, do you think we could find a rib for Tania to jump into? (preferably with a non-skiffofobic driver  )

Tania, Sergei,

I have asked and hopefully it should be fine. Find me in the morning or speak to Debbie and she will point you in the right direction.
