Event Cancelled: ACO 11th MUSTO Skiff World Championship 2020
As you are all well aware, the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation is having a huge impact across the world right now. We very much hoped that we could continue with our planned events for later in the year, but it is with great sadness that we are announcing that our event host, Sailing Club Eckernförde, has made the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 World Championships in Germany.
We know that this is not the news that you all wanted to hear, especially as the event month of August is still months away from now. However, based on the current situation in Germany, we fully appreciate why Sailing Club Eckernförde has arrived at this decision. The safety of the class and all that are involved is the main priority right now and local Government restrictions to manage the pandemic were limiting the options to host our event as planned within 2020.
The International Committee extends our thanks to the German Class Association, ACO, and SCE who have all put a lot of time and effort into organising this event to date. It is hugely disappointing for all, but especially for all of you that were looking forward to this major event in our international sailing calendar.
We will continue to monitor the on-going situation for all of our other class events and work closely with our sailing club hosts to deliver as many of the organised events as we safely can. Until then - stay safe, stay at home, and let’s hope we can all get back to sailing soon!

Eckernförde is a perfect location for a challenging and enjoyable MUSTO Skiff World Championship event. It has a long sailing history, being the chosen sailing venue for the 1936 Olympics, and it is known for its reliable winds, both gradient and thermal. It also offers a spacious sailing area with no ferries and low levels of commercial and recreational bay traffic to interrupt racing.
The water at Eckernförde is very deep (>20m) with gentle swell, allowing for turtling and capsizing without the risk of mast and boat damage. However, should you need any boat repairs or support before or during the event, the German Ovington Importer, Holger Jess, has his workshop premises only 3km away from the event location.
The course area is directly adjacent to sailing club, removing the need to commute to the race course each day. The whole bay is available to position the race course (roughly 4km by 15km). There is also a ramp for easy launching.
The host sailing club is extremely supportive of the event and offers an excellent infrastructure, with plenty of space on site to accommodate the boat park, parking, caravan parking, camping, and event socials and ceremonies. The sailing club also has its own restaurant with a view across the water to enable family and friends attending the event to enjoy and support the MUSTO Skiff sailors from shore.

Typical Wind Conditions The wind is South Westerly dominant. When there are thermal conditions (easterly), the bay has a funnel effect, which significantly strengthens the thermal breeze.
This weather station is located 20km away from the course area and is the closest weather station available with wind statistics. It is located on a light house giving generally high readings, but low readings in thermal conditions (outside the funnel).
Here is the full schedule with dates and times for registration, measurement, racing and social events.
Please note that social events may be subject to change, and the confirmed activities will be announced closer to the start date of the World Championships. Additional subsidised tickets for your family and friends to join all social events will be available to purchase at the event. Things To Do at the Event Location
For your lay days and activities for family and friends attending the event, Eckernförde has lots to offer from a wide range of restaurants and cafes to historic landmarks, such as an ornate 13th century church and a German submarine ready to be explored in the harbour!
For those looking to enjoy the outdoors, there are several beautiful lakes to hike and explore; a four-kilometre-long sandy beach; and plenty of water activities to do in the harbour. There is also the opportunity to do the NordArt Guided tour, which holds one of the largest exhibitions of contemporary art in Europe and is only open to visitors once a year during the summer months.
Eckernförde remains to be a very popular tourist town, and as such, it provides plenty of local accommodation options and things to do. The sailing club is also walking distance from the centre of town.
August is also the warmest time of year to visit Germany, with average highs of 22° and lows of 12°. Travel Options
Eckernförde is located 30km, North-west of Kiel/Schilksee and 870km/540miles from the port of Calais, providing the potential for bringing boats over from the UK to the event location by road transport.
