Hints & Tips:
Upwind Speed Priorities
This came from the forum; a very useful
post by Richard Stenhouse.
If you are looking for improved upwind
speed then it is useful to break down the challenge
and prioritise where to focus your attentions.
In order of importance:
1) Keeping the boat flat - biggest effect on speed by
far
2) Main sheet trimming and tension - effecting height
and speed and required for the boat to be flat
steering -being smooth with out hitting waves
3) Cunningham - the power control, once you have enough
power to trap the more cunningham the less drag
4) Trapeze Height -maximize what weight you have
5) Lowers setting - biggest control effect on power
of the rig settings
6) Batten tension - you need lots so you can depower
with the cunningham without inverting the sail
7) Sailors weight and height - it makes a difference
but everything above makes more
8) Traveller length - affects height
9) Kicker - affects height mostly but also speed
10) Rake - affects the trim of the boat and how it feels,
can be sailed fast on any rake
11) Spreader position - very small differences in speed
the standard setting works well across the wind range
but if your trying other rakes other spreader possitions
should work better.
