Musto Skiff 2017 – 1-2 July 2017 Eastbourne Sailing Club
Fleet sharpen their skills ahead of the GBR Nationals ...
Report by Alex Knight;
10 Musto skiffs arrived to a friendly welcome at Eastbourne sailing club. Race one was sailed in gusty and shifty offshore breeze. Ben Schooling and Paul Molesworth got to the windward mark first by going right up the beat managing to avoid some of the tide.
These two continued to fight it out for the rest of the race and it was Ben that came through with the win followed by Paul and Chris Rashley in third.
After an abandoned race and a bit of a wait, a 16 knot sea breeze materialised. Race 2 was won by Dave Posten with a very tight finish behind him for the minor places. Andy Tarboton took second and Chris third just holding off the two boats behind him on the finish line. The next race was a slightly calmer affair after the race to the right following the start with boats trying to avoid some of the tide. Jamie Hilton took the win followed by Dave and Andy.
The second day dawned with similar conditions to the beginning of the first day, a gusty looking offshore breeze. Race 4 was arguably the closest race of the weekend with many place changes. Going down wind for last time it was looking like any of the top five could take the win. Chris came through for the win and Alex Knight just beating Ben on the line for second. Just after the wind completely disappeared and we all waited to see if anything would come back.
After a wait, a sea breeze arrived but never fully developed resulting in a punchy 20 knots on the left of the course and a shifty 10-12 on the right. After a lot of place changes Ben took the win followed by Alex and Paul.
After a lot of adding up by sailors, Ben took the win, Dave second and Alex third, with only a point between each boat in the top 4 showing just how close the racing was. A great weekend was had by all and the class are looking forward to the nationals at Brightlingsea in August.
