Musto Skiff 2017 AUS Nationals Race Reports

Overall a great regatta even though the wind and regatta planning didn’t align.  ex World Champion Jon Newman showed he is still on top.  Thor again fast and consistent.  AST sailor Will Phillips sailed brilliantly on day 1 and found the racing really relevant to his Olympic training.

Day 1
The wind on the course was between the below two systems and oddly sometimes the RHS paid and sometimes the LHS, plus shifts in the middle.  Really fun racing.

Race 2

8-15 knot gusty breeze saw the fleet head quickly to the left hand shore. The leaders tacked just short of the lay line, those that hung on to the left hand side of the best abruptly lifting up in pressure to cross those gambling on the right. Jon Newman led narrowly at mark 1, followed by Will Phillips and Richie Robertson.
The chasing pack descended in pressure with the leaders enjoying a comfortable break. At the gate Jon and Will once again headed left with the pack following. Denis Jones gambled right and lost ground, Arthur Brett, Richie and Tim Hill stayed left and made up distance.
Jon and Will went for bear away sets. The pack behind split, Richie followed the leaders, Arthur and Tim gybe set, Denis bear away set. Jon and Will fell into low pressure while Denis, Arthur and Tim enjoyed big gains into the finish. Jon crossed first, Will second Denis slipped into third part way down the run, before the last role of the dice saw Tim slip through on the line to take third, Denis fourth.

Day 2 Cancelled due to thunder/lighting and no wind

Day 3
With wind between the below 2 charts and big seas coming in from the North West unprotected from the Islands, the sea state was a challenge for everyone.  Many nosedives  in the first race and 3 non finishes made it a big challenge for the heaving race committee.
Jon Newman was the only one to get around unscathed but pretty much the whole fleet tried to push themselves by going for it with spinnakers in the big seas.  This is the Musto way where you just have a go….. what’s the worst that can happen.  Well done everyone.
Will Phillips was fast on the first beat but unfortunately the spinnaker snagged the water on the hoist and  he was then in loads of trouble..  Great to have one of the AST 49er sailors at the regatta.
