MUSTO SKIFF GER EUROCUP 2016
German Open 2016, Travemünder Woche
This year’s Travemünder Woche was the highlight of the German MustoSkiff racing calendar. Four days of racing did not only count for the leaderboard, but also as German Open, final event of the German Circuit and German EuroCup. Nobody looking for some points for national or international rankings or even to become this year’s champion would miss out. 31 Musto Skiffs from all over Europe attended, from north to south, from Norway to Spain.
Most sailors arrived on Wednesday, enjoying the extra time for small fixes and polishing. The games were supposed to begin on Thursday, but the weather forecast had bad news: Rasmus let us wait. From the shore the sailors interpreted every single gust, but no useable wind appeared on the race course. Afternoon put an end to the mind game, the remaining time was used for preparing the barbecue and the champion’s celebration of our new World Champion Andi Lachenschmid. Drinks, dinner, a presentation on the upcoming Worlds in Palma and footage from our photograph Sven Lamprecht made a perfect evening.
Friday finally sent us on the water. Right on time at 11 o’clock the F18 started, 5 minutes later the Mustos on the same course. Wind was difficult. Big shifts, wind speed between 2 and 12knots, rain and sunshine took turns. Results were as changing as the weather. Frithjof Schwerdt dominated events with full four first places, as he did on Kieler Woche. Following him there was a tough race for second place, whereas World Champion Andi Lachenschmid and German Champion Iver Ahlmann had difficulties. This evening the city of Lübeck invited us for a dinner on the museum ship Passat, where day’s events were analyzed in detail in proper atmosphere.
Saturday presented racing on the Media Course. As in the previous year and during Kieler Woche the races were presented from camera boats and drones with live reporting. Wind and weather were similar to Friday. Due to a big rain cloud wind exceeded 25knots, including rain, sun and shifts. Just like the day before Schwerdt controlled the races, followed by Paul Dijkstra (Netherlands) and Alexander Greil (Switzerland).
At 5pm selected MustoSkiffs attended the Trave-Race to fight in short races for a big bottle of champagne right in front of the spectators, which was then shared with guests and journalists.
This evening, another windless day was expected, which gave time to party, share memories and invest into international friendship. Sunday gave certainty – no wind. Hence, Schwerdt was celebrated as the winner of this year’s German Open Champion and winner of the German Circuit.
