The first Scottish Skiff event of the year was held at Ullswater on the weekend of the 14-15th of May. Around 10-12 boats arrived from the North of England and Scotland with the furthest travelled coming from Aberdeen in Jono Shelley. The fleet were greeted with a light and patchy breeze for the island race resulting in marathon and not a sprint of a race with some snakes and ladders thrown in.
In the first reshuffle at the first turning mark Charlie Chandler recovering from a mediocre start and minor grounding to take the lead in the race round the lake. By the first corner the fleet had re bunched with John Reekie, Ian Trotter and Dan Trotter vying to catch the leader. Try as we may Charlie was transitioning between patches well and lead round the island at the bottom of the lake. Dan Trotter had sailed into a hole allowing Ian and John to continue the chase in totally different breeze. When we converged on the beat back Charlie was capsized by a pretty impressive gust/wind shift allowing Ian Trotter to take the lead for the first time. At the corner Charlie made his break and sailing low and around Ian to regain the lead. John was clutching at straws in an attempt to catch the leaders ahead and hit the shore. Alas the shortened course went up and Charlie crossed the line for a well deserved win with Ian and John in second and third places respectively.
In perhaps the cruellest turn of events for the day it was Jono Shelley losing his Ullswater safe 4th place in the final meters and coming in last place.
Sunday dawned bright and sunny for the second day running which is a miracle for the lakes. Unfortunately they could not muster a second miracle and provide any breeze with which to race. A unanimous decision was made to postpone for an hour and then by midday it was time to pack up for the journey home.
Charlie Chandler was crowned the victor and possibly the first single race series in the history of the Scottish Skiffs.
