Skiff Euro Cup fleet had 20 entries at Kieler Woche 2013
with competitors travelling from as far a field as Switzerland,
Norway, Netherlands, Great Britain and of course Germany.
The atmosphere at Kieler Woche was electric and the view
over the Baltic race courses was spectacular with this
being the largest sailing event in Europe with 4,500
competitors in various craft taking part.
Racing could be watched on a huge TV set up in the centre
of the dinghy park on the specially prepared Kiel Wocher
TV racing course. It was an amazing event with great
wind conditions and a mixture of sunshine and rain which
did not dampen the fun.
On Day 1 we had a tricky
force 3 breeze with 3 races ran. All races were very
close with tight finishes and 3 different winners. Florian
Kemper had the overall lead closely followed by Nicolas
Duchoud and Paul Dijkstra.
Day 2 brought a force
4/5 gusty wind with rain which made for very interesting
racing with 4 races completed. The day belonged to Roger
Oswald winning 3 out of the 4 races with Paul Dijkstra
taking the other win of the day.
Day 3 brought extremely
challenging conditions with a good forces 5/6 breeze
and some strong gusts just to entertain the competitors
and spectators viewing. Iver Ahlmann showed that weight
is not everything for heavy wind sailing by winning
the last 2 out of the 3 races ran this day. Roger Oswald
was the other race winner keeping him in the lead going
into the final day.
Going into day 4, the
competition was still wide open between Roger Oswald.
Paul Dijkstra and Iver Ahlmann all in with a chance
of overall victory. The conditions were again very trying
with a good 4/5 breeze gusting 6 on occasions. The front
of the fleet for the penultimate race was very tight
with Paul Dijkstra taking the win followed by Roger
Oswald and Nicolas Dichoud. The final race was again
tightly fought with Nicolas Duchoud taking the win from
Paul Dijkstra and Roger Oswald.
This was enough to give the overall series win to Roger
Oswald who thoroughly deserved the crown after being
very consistent throughout the event.
All competitors appeared to thoroughly
enjoy the atmosphere on this huge gathering of sailing
craft and competitors at Kiel and the event ran with
typical German precision. Hopefully many of the other
sailors will have seen the sheer power and fun that
the MUSTO Skiff provides and may decide to join our
All competitors saw this Euro Cup leg as a great success
and many said that they will return for Kieler Woche 2014.
Letís hope that we can at least double the entry with
a bit of gentle persuasion to other MUSTO sailors back
in their homelands.
