Musto Performance Skiff

Alpsee-Skiff-Weekend, 11th-13th June 2011, Germany. Bookmark and Share

On the Bank Holiday weekend from 11th-13th June, 20 Musto Skiffs met for the annual Skiff Regatta at Alpsee in the south of Germany, hosted by Segelclub Alpsee Immenstadt. As ever the event was shared with the 29ers and 49ers, and promised close challenging fleet racing, and is one of the highlights on the calender for the central European MPS fleet.

The sailors were greeted by a wet and rainy Saturday morning, but with a good breeze blowing, and the fleet went a float for the first days racing. In a force 2 - 3 the fleet managed 4 races, and true to form, Roger Oswald took control early with 3 wins from 4 races, with Martin Mayerhofer, Andy Bunyan and Markus Mühlbauer fighting it out for the other top places.

Day Two dawned with much lighter winds, and was a challenge for the Race Officer to get the races in. After some delay the fleet managed Race 5 in very light wind, with bands of pressure coming across the race course which all the sailors had to make the best of. Markus Mühlbauer took the win in Race 5 ahead of Andy Bunyan, with Nicolas Duchoud taking third. Race 6 was optimistically started again in very light winds, and the fleet managed one round, but on the way to the windward mark for the second time the wind died complete across the course, and the Race Officer had to abandon the race.

The third and final day started with no wind in the morning, and the fleet waited ashore to see if the conditions would change. Finally after a few hours delay the wind arrived, and with a solid breeze quickly established the Race Officer wasted no time in getting the first of the 2 races of the day started. Markus Mühlbauer was on the charge in both races, showing good speed, and with a second from Oswald in Race 6 and a win in the final Race 7, was challenging Roger Oswald for the overall Regatta win. However, with a 5th in Race 7 Roger did enough to win on countback from Markus Mühlbauer, with Martin Mayerhofer moving up the leaderboard on the final day to take third overall.

Overall a good weekend was had by all, and Segelclub Alpsee Immenstadt were very good hosts, and made sure all the skiff sailors were well fed (and watered) after racing. Many thanks to everyone at Segelclub Alpsee Immenstadt, and the fleet looks forward to returning to Alpsee next year.
