boats turned up to the first circuit event of the season,
which was a sort of accelerated transition from winter
to spring, starting with a cold, rainy and grey first
race which changed progressively until by the final
race on Sunday we had bright sunshine and a light breeze.
The first race started in breezy conditions
with gusts above 20 knots. Big Rich Stenhouse showed
that neither a complete break from sailing over the
winter, nor fatherhood had slowed him down in these
conditions. Sten was rampant and powered away from the
chasing pack who struggled round in his wake, led by
Bruce Keen and Alistair Conn. Unfortunately, Tom Offer
and Dan Vincent had a coming together resulting in a
crumpled wing and retirement for Tom and an ugly crack
on Dan’s bow, but he soldiered on.
Sten was untouchable in races 2 and 3,
ahead of Keen and Vincent, but as the breeze dropped
off to a F3-4 Keen managed to take a win in a last race.

Saturday night was a right laugh, with
rugby on TV, modest amounts of beer and the very real
risk of the shattered sailors falling into their winter
soup.
Sunday
dawned, and the lake outside was glassy calm, there
was certainly more wind inside the bunk rooms. After
a one hour postponement the wind filled in to a useful
8-10 knots.
The spring-like conditions brought new
faces to the front, and gambolling around at the head
of the fleet was the ever frisky Mike Palfreman. Speed,
good decisions and the energy of a new born lamb ensured
two first place finishes, just ahead of the improving
Dan Ward, emerging like a shy daffodil from the rich
and fertile learning ground of the main fleet. Unfortunately
for the Palfreman and Ward they let their exuberance
get the better of them and both were judged slightly
premature (not for the first time) in the last race,
letting Dan Vincent through to win the last race of
the event. Back in the pack, Keen couldn’t do enough
to close the gap on Sten, who took a deserved victory.
