Musto
Skiff Travemünde training camp | 21-24 May 2010
Great weather, weak to moderate winds and 8 registered
Musto Skiffs – a promising forecast for this year’s
training camp at the Lübeck Yacht Club (LYC) in
Travemünde, Möwenstein.
And for once, the experience exceeded the expectation.
Max and I took the Friday and Tuesday
off work to turn the long Whitsun weekend into a short
vacation. On Friday, we enjoyed 20 degrees and sunshine
as we rigged up the boats at the Lübecker Yacht
Club. We then took the boats out for a spin to the fairway
buoy to find our sea legs and ended the day with a barbeque
and a few beers.
On the Saturday, 7 boats were ready to
go. Most of the participants were from Northern Germany
but Marius braved an eight-hour drive from Düsseldorf
to join us.
We split into two groups for some manoeuvre training
and tried out some of Iver’s tips, which are worth their
weight in gold and, by the way, aren’t on Richard’s
DVD.
In the evening there was another barbeque, another couple
of beers and, of course, some gin & tonic.
Sunday’s
programme was much the same, we enjoyed perfect weather
conditions and I did more gybing in 30 minutes than
I ever thought was possible! I was still feeling it
long afterwards. Late in the afternoon, Max and I wanted
to put ourselves to the test yet again and we really
knocked ourselves out. After achieving a personal best
of 17 knots, a really choppy offshore wind suddenly
picked up and we had to use every bit of our strength
to battle our way back. Afterwards, surprise, surprise,
we had a barbeque...
On the Monday, there was another training
session followed by Kaffee und Kuchen, which was very
kindly sponsored by Guido and his familiy which made
for a very sociable end of the event.
All up it was a really successful camp. Everyone made
great strides and had fun together to boot. A good time
was also had by accompanying friends and family as well
as by the three Musto Skiff test sailors, who we’ll
hopefully be seeing more of in the future.
A very special thanks goes to Max for
the seamless organisation and to Iver for his patience
with us rookies. Let’s do it again soon!
