Musto Performance Skiff

What Musto Skiff Sailors do in the winter Bookmark and Share

With our lakes frozen and snow drifts covering the roads, an MPS sailor needs to find other things to keep himself occupied.

Andy Peake and his team mate, Michael Sugden, have been taking advantage of the cold weather to train for their April expedition to the North Pole. A 360 nautical mile trek pulling sledges against 7 other international teams, including the Norwegian duo who won the recent South Pole race against James Cracknell and Ben Fogall. Andy and Michael are doing the race to raise awareness of climate change and are asking people to reduce their carbon emmissions by 10 percent in 2010.

Training has involved pulling tyres, 40 mile hikes and an arctic training week in Norway where the team had to jump into a freezing lake and camp in -20 degrees c. Next up is shotgun training in case of any close encounters with polar bears (to frighten the bear, rather than shoot!).

Andy is hoping for a light wind nationals as he's likely to be a stone lighter on his return! We wish the team the best of luck and for the continued UK cold snap.

Eds note: Take a look at the YouTube vid on the blog of Andy taking a cold dip ... brrr ...
