Feedback from
the Rutland Training 2008
Hi Sten
I though the training was excellent as ever, many thanks
to you & Kit and all the people in RIBs, committee
boats etc braving the freezing cold.
My top tip was approaching starts in skiffs very differently
– looking for a very wide lane, avoiding getting involved
with other boats where possible & allowing a longer
run-up as stopping/tacking is harder/slower than in
slow boats.
I really liked the mix of training & racing, short
& long courses, variety of exercises, availability
of video footage ie pretty much everything!
I think the training could occasionally benefit from
more focus on the things people are doing well for others
to re-apply as well as identifying areas to improve.
Getting everyone together for the 1st exercise sometimes
took a while so may be worth starting with a mini-race
at a set time so everyone gets there in same place &
then move into the exercises.
Also it was great value for money - £35 for 3
high quality weekends coaching can’t be bought anywhere
else!
Hi Matt – got any other thoughts?
Cheers

Brilliant three weekends, the top tip that took 'on
board' was
controlling the boat when holding station, using my
body weight and
positioning to hold the boat on the line for a reasonable
length of
time. This still could be improved a lot but i feel
that i have the
basic knowledge, and now can practice this skill in
my own time on the
water.
Thanks to you both,

Dear Richard,
Top tip would be go to as many of the 6 days as possible,
preferably more than one!
I think the main plus is the meeting up of so many people
to focus on training, and (from my previous experience)
being able to go through the video footage afterwards.
If you do something similar again next year (? prior
to loading up for Melbourne, or a bit earlier in the
autumn when the weather may not be quite so daunting?),
I will come to rather more than 1 day.
Cheers, it really is fantastic for the class that you
(all) put in so much effort to training.

Hi Richard,
Many thanks to you and Kit for a fantastic series of
training events. I learnt so many things that it is
difficult to pick just one, but probably the most valuable
for me were techniques to calm the boat down, which
means that I can now launch the boat in more breeze
than I ever would have done with confidence that I can
keep it under control,. So now I can get out and practice
more! It was very impressive how you managed to cater
for both experienced and novice musto sailors - it would
have been so easy for you to pitch the training at the
already skilled sailors and let the novices swim - i
really appreciated that. Although some of the tactical
exercises were beyond my current level of boat handling
the combination of on the water coaching and video debrief
at the end of each day contained a mine of useful information,
and the exercises gave me something to aspire to :-).
Throughout the training there was so much help and advice
on offer from all of the fleet - for me just the opportunity
to sail with other Musto sailors, watch how it's done
and discuss technique was invaluable in itself.
I have to admit that at the beginnnig of the first day,
with the wind much stronger and gustier than I would
normally consider launching into I was standing on the
shore quaking. Kit jumped in, hoisted my mainsail, put
my boat on the water and instructed me to climb on board,
at which point I was left with little option but to
launch. After I'd spent an exhilirating morning capsizing
interspersed with short bursts of high speed on the
edge of control, in the afternoon she took the time
to take me through some of the basics sailing her boat
2-up which made a massive difference to my understanding
of the boat.
I also found it helpful on the final weekend to have
additional coaches Graeme Oliver and Simon Reynolds
offer more advice and alternative viewpoints - many
thanks to them and also to Paul Manning whose knowledge
I benefitted from on many occasions over the 3 weekends.
Along with your obvious deep understanding of the Musto
Skiff your and Kit's generosity and infinite patience
are a huge asset to the class. Thanks once again to
you and everyone else involved in making the training
such a massive success.
Cheers,
Rob Wadge
