Musto Performance Skiff

Musto Training Day at Stokes Bay 5/6 April

A fresh Force 4 from the NW greeted 8 sailors who had travelled to Stokes Bay to receive Rick Perkins’s pearls of wisdom.

After a quick brief from Rick and videomeister Paul Manning we hit the water. For some it was a bit too much and respect is due to Nick Powell for taking his first ever sail in a Musto in conditions best described as challenging (even Andy Peake was capsizing). Therefore with a slightly depleted fleet the morning session started and soon the sailors warmed up as we started on the short line and negotiated the tight windward-leeward course.

Having completed two ordinary races the starting became more complex, as the start could be at any time in a one minute window. This put the emphasis on boat handling and slow speed boat control, which would have been tricky at any time, but was made harder with the additional element of a spring tide. All the fun and games were captured on video and we returned to the club for lunch and de-brief.

The video debriefs were brilliant, how did coaches ever manage without them. We were all able to see the good and bad points of our technique in glorious technicolour and discuss them before going out to correct them in the afternoon. As always there were enough capsizes and dodgy incidents caught on film to provoke ‘hilarious’ banter and debate.

We headed out for an hour of tacking and gybing on the whistle. With the combinations of Rick’s hints and tips and this intensive practice (probably a championship’s worth of boathandling in a day) all felt they had definitely improved. After some short races to finish us off we headed back in.

Unfortunately due to people being snowed in and various other ‘wintery’ excuses there was no club racing on Sunday.

Many thanks to Rick and Paul for coming down and getting thoroughly frozen as we got warmer.

Vid's are now on You Tube.

To the right of the image there is a link highlighted that says “more info” if you tell people to click on that, it gives my thoughts of the particular footage.

The other clips can be viewed from the rolling menu, and they contain “more info” appropriate to their footage.
