Musto Performance Skiff

Rutland Musto Skiff Open Meeting 15/16 March 2008

23 boats turn out despite the forecast ....

This event was a good lesson in ‘How to win without winning’. None of the top three managed to finish first in any of the four races which were competed for in a variable and shifty F2. At this wind strength a slight difference in pressure allows the Musto helms to straighten their legs and the boatspeed to significantly increase, nobody was able to show any great consistency in predicting where and when this would happen.

The first race was led from the start by Inland Champion Kit Stenhouse. Places changed behind her but it was Endeavour Champion, Steve Tylecote who edged out World Champion, Rich Stenhouse.

Race 2, and while Kit was recovering her boat from an untimely capsize, Dan Vincent and Gareth Davies picked a big right hand shift to lead round the windward mark. They swapped places down the first run and then remained that way until the finish. Behind them Alex Koukaris was best of the rest, just in front of Rich Stenhouse.

The third race started and, new to the class, Matt Hollis scored a convincing victory, while Mike Palfreman, acknowledged light wind guru, was at last beginning to show some form with a third behind R Stenhouse.

Race Four and Nick Hollis determined to shine after his brother’s success pulled off a port tack flier, welcome to the fleet Nick. This propelled him to 5th place following Tylecote, Tom Offer, Vincent and a victorious Iver Ahlmann.

All retired to the bar, happy but tired, looking forward to the promise of more wind on day 2. Unfortunately, Sunday dawned and the wind delivered in spades, there was little dissent as the Race Officer cancelled all racing, which left Rich Stenhouse the winner, followed by Tylecote and Vincent.
