Skiff Training
and Racing @ Rutland SC
16 skiffs arrived at Rutland for the fist
of 5 weekends of training organised by Kit (MPS Inland
Champion) and Richard (MPS World Champion) Stenhouse.
Open to all Skiff sailors, visitors had travelled from
as far as Lymington and Chester.
The first event was best attended by RS700s
and Musto Skiffs. The training covered all standards
and included such notables as current and previous Endeavour
trophy winners Steve Tylecote and Nick Craig.
After an onshore briefing, training consisted
of on the water coaching, with boats performing slalom
courses against the clock, follow my leader, chase the
rabbit starting practice, and cycle pursuit type racing
where boats started in opposite directions from the
centre of a windward-leeward course, and tried to catch
each other.
Boats were split into 4 groups that worked
together to coach and improve each other, as well as
adding a little team spirit. After a debrief and video
review, trainees retired to the bar. On Sunday, Saturday’s
training was put to the test with three races being
organised. Conditions were trick with very variable
wind conditions. Results will accumulate to the end
of the training.
Next session is Saturday 24/25 November.
