Billy No Mates
Trophy - Carsington
Bright sun and moderate cool north east
force four breeze blowing down Carsington lake. Four
Musto Skiffs turned up for the fast single handed, Billy
No Mates Trophy. 51 entry’s only 48 sailed out towards
the south of the lake to start the first race.
Most sailors were shocked as they sailed
through the moorings into the open lake. The wind was
very unstable, very sharp quick gusts, shifty winds
and random holes made racing very interesting. Especially
the windward mark, which was dropped in fluky winds
from being shadowed by trees.
The windward mark was the gainer or the
loser as boats approached flat trapizing and suddenly
found themselves under the water capsized to windward.
The downwind gybes caused the inexperience sailors to
go for a swim as the unexpected sharp gusts soon put
the Skiffs in a very unstable position. Saturdays three
races all over. Richard with straight firsts was leading
event followed by a second musto skiff Kit Stenhouse.
Sunday the winds drop slightly. The course
not changed the shifty unbalanced winds again made racing
tricky. Richard had no problems in holding his 1st position.
Even though all the four musto skiffs
are lake sailors from Rutland, the racing was still
very tricky with the unstable winds. However Casington
made all the sailors very welcome with very generous
prices, donated by EVOLOITON SAILING.
Thanks to all for a great weekend. Tom
