National Training Day - Dalgety Bay
9
people sailed in the Musto Performance Skiff training
weekend at Dalgety Bay with coaching from Ian Renilson.
These included 6 newcomers to the class, and 2 brand
new boats were unwrapped the day before the event for
their first sail.
The weather was generally pretty good
for the time of the year, but the cold northerly wind
over the hills was shifty and gusty and delivered squalls
with hailstones on both days.
The training focussed on boat handling,
and was mostly aimed at the newcomers and less experienced
Musto Skiff sailors. Saturday started with a short session
of shore drills before hitting the water for 2 sessions
of short windward-leeward sailing, each followed by
free soup and a video-debrief. Saturday evening was
spent sharing sailing stories at the club bar with a
carry-out meal.
On Sunday we sailed further from the shore to get longer
legs with less pressurised boat handling to work on
improving techniques with tacking & gybing on the
whistle. Again there were two sessions with free soup
and a video debrief after each.
All the sailors had a great time and improved
noticeably over the weekend, despite (or maybe because
of) a fair few swims! Everyone was exhausted by the
end of sailing and there will be a few aches & pains
afterwards, but they now know what to practice and should
be able to make good progress themselves. I hope we
can arrange a similar weekend again soon - maybe I’ll
get to sail next time!
Many thanks to everyone at Dalgety Bay
Sailing Club who helped to organise the weekend - and
to Ovington Boats and the Musto Skiff Committee for their
inspiration and support.
