The
Glyn Charles Pursuit Race Saturday 17th June 06
Hayling Island sailing Club hosted the
pursuit race around chichester harbour to raise money
for the John Merricks Sailing Trust, in memory of Glyn
Charles. Glyn would have enjoyed the nip and tuck tidal
tactics needed to win in the light winds. The 120 competing
were keen to win the fantastic prizes kindely donated.
Even the last placed wayfarer dinghy won
a new pair of skis as a hint to take up another sport.
Three Musto Skiffs started with a group of RS700's.
The Skiffs all finished mid fleet but
had a challenging race shore hopping and then tight
reaching only just holding the kite. The RS700's struggled
upwind in the light airs and making the marks with the
tight kite reaches. Neil Upton Brown, a new MPS sailor
racing GBR253 showed good form and tidal tactics to
pass Sten GBR209 on the final beat by sailing on port
in the channel and getting an excellent leebow effect
from the tide, instaed of following the crowd on starboard
tack to the shore. Kit racing GBR252 finished third
skiff,
Lady luck shone on her later at the prize
giving when she won firstly a tactic compass, for travelling
from Leicestershire and then a bag of goodies in the
Holt draw.
The winner of the pursuit race was Mike
Dawe,Laura Gilbert & Paul Carpenter sailing an RS
elite First Single hander was Jane Blaydes in 5th sailing
a Solo to win a fantastic Basilica Laptop. The Glyn
Charles Pursuit Race is defently a fun event to put
on your calender for next year, hopefully the conditions
and course will suit skiffs next year.
