| Filey Regatta
175 boats raced over the weekend 8th/9th
July at the 2006 Filey Regatta on the two courses a
P course near the Brigg and a Sausage course in the
south of the bay towards the cliffs.
It was good practice for the Nationals with 6 MPS racing
on the same start as the RS800 and beating the on the
water in most races.
Most of the visitors camped for £5 in a field
at the top of the cliffs and a BBQ at the club, this
created a fun holiday atmosphere to the event with partying
well into the night.
We had breakfast of Bacon and Egg butty whilst watching
the local fishermen bring in there catch of lobsters
and crabs, and dragging there traditional fishing boats
with rusty old tractors across the beach.
Saturdays racing was a lovely sunny day and light to
medium winds which were in bands of pressure and some
large wind shifts, putting a premium on going the right
way.
The first race Kit won the start but tacked off on the
first shift with Ian to let Richard and John through
at the top of the beat as the wind went further left.
The next beat it went right to even things up a bit
and keep you on your toes. Richard won Kit pulled through
to 2nd and Ian 3rd.
Race 2 was the same again. Race 3 the wind had steadied
down a bit and Ian trotter showed some extra pace to
lead most of the way around in a close battle with Richard
and Kit, But got caught by a bad header when committed
to crossing Richard on port to loose the lead.
Sunday and a change of weather some light rain over
night and lots of wind to test the tents out. Lucky
the tent repairs held. After a night of flapping tents
and beer many sailors thought it was too windy and chose
to watch instead.
The MPS entertained them! Race 4 and 5 Richard won but
was closely followed by Ian and Kit. Race 6 the big
one with 1st already taken it was between Kit and Ian
who were on equal points. The wind increased and a lot
of the other classes chickened out. The race was very
close with Richard, Ian and Kit within boat lengths
for most of the four laps of a very tight course. On
the final lap Ian took first when Richard pitch poled
when dropping his kite and Kit got blown over on the
leeward mark rounding.
Race 7 just when you thought it was all over the race
was on the pack you boat up and get off the beach before
tide comes in. We were last again to the delight of
the spectators waiting for the prize giving or my car
to get a wash.
Looking forward to the Nationals there, should be a
good one.
