Musto Skiffs at Lee
on the Solent Sailing Club
2nd and 3rd July 2005.
The Musto Skiff fleet suffered a North
/ South divide this weekend due to the LOSSC Open clashing
with the famous Lord Birkett long-distance race at Ullswater;
a Musto Skiff favourite. (Musto Skiffs took 2nd, 3rd
and 4th I believe)
The southern contingent assembled at LOSSC
for some closely contested racing. Saturday brought
a reasonable breeze accompanied by some very steep chop
and plenty of Solent traffic to keep the fleet on it’s
toes. The first race set the tone for the rest of the
day with Richard Stenhouse taking the win from Graeme
Oliver with Rick Perkins in third. Oliver was leading
the second race for some time until a near crash with
a friendly cruiser let Stenhouse through; Oliver recovered
to hold of Perkins again third. The final race for the
day saw Stenhouse lead again from class newcomer Brian
Greensmith who held second for the whole race until
the last run to the finish saw him capsize to windward
as he was shadowed by a passing cruiser. Oliver and
Perkins took advantage of his misfortune to keep the
results consistent. Greensmith recovered to take 4th
… he was robbed!!
Sunday dawned with less breeze but still
a few lumps around the course; the breeze was pretty
variable in both direction and strength guaranteeing
a bit more of a mix in the results. Stenhouse won the
first race with class new comer and youngest competitor
Ant Chapman and Graeme Oliver finishing with a dead
heat for second followed by Jamie Stevenson in 4th.
The fifth race saw Stevenson start well and hook into
good breeze on the first run to open a comfortable gap
on the fleet. The bunch fought hard for second with
Stenhouse taking second and wife Kit Stenhouse taking
3rd. The final race was again a close fought affair
with Ant Chapman enjoying the lighter winds to take
the win from Richard Stenhouse with Perkins 3rd.
Congratulations to Richard Stenhouse who
took the event with four firsts and a second but recognition
is also due to some of the new owners who are now breaking
into the top three. Thanks to LOSSC for running the
event and we promise to shave next year before we kiss
the commodores wife at the prize giving.
