Musto Performance
Skiff Inland Championships 2005
at Datchet Water Sailing Club
The Musto Skiffs sailed an outer loop
trapezoid course on Saturday, shared with 29ers.
The Race Officers plan was to try and get the line square
and not worry about the rest of the marks which turned
out to be a good call with the very low water level
making the wind swirl around with 70º shifts, the
wind was 8 knots enough to wire so the schedule was
changed for 4 races on Saturday with the forecast of
no wind on Sunday.
Race 1 : Ant passed Kit on lap 2 and Sten fort through
the pack to finish second kit third
Race 2 : The wind swung left allowing Sten to duck the
fleet on port and be on the lay line. Half way up the
beat a further shift left allowed flying kites to the
windward mark.
Sten now had a comfortable lead for the rest of the
race, Clements picked the way well with the wind shifting
back to the right for subsequent laps to finish 2nd.
Race 3: Sten and Ant had a close race with Ant reading
the gusts well down wind Sten with an upwind edge. On
the last down wind Ant looked like passing but hadn’t
noticed Mark Addison come into play catching him on
starboard. Ant capsized avoiding Mark giving Sten 1st
Mark 2nd.
Race 4:Kit lead from the start with the wind steady
pressure across the course looked to have the race in
the bag, Nick streatfield leading the rest of the pack
but the wind went patchy on the next lap allowing Clements
through to a nice lead. The last beat it was all change
again with Dave Poston taking the lead with pressure
on the left. Sten passed Dave on the last downwind to
record his third race win.
After 4 races in the warm weather we were glad our boats
only weighed 80kg when we came to pull the up the steep
sides of the reservoir. A nice cold pint at the Datchet
club bar quenched the legs.
On Sunday the Musto Skiffs had the
inner windward leeward course.
Race 5: Ant snook inside Kit at the windward mark with
pressure from the left. Kit got back into the lead on
the downwind, on the next beat Ant sailed well to take
the lead with several boats taking there chances in
the fickle wind. His brother Ed Chapman in his 1st event
was now getting the hang of it to come 2nd and Kit 3rd.
It is good to see another 29er champion using the MPS
as a spring board to the 49er.
Race 6 : No wind no race 6.
Richard Stenhouse won the 2005 Musto Skiff Inlands with
a race to spare on 5 points with Ant Chapman 2nd with
10 points and Kit Stenhouse 3rd with 14 points.
