London Boat
Show Pursuit Race - 16th Jan 2005
Brilliant
sunshine met the competitors of this years Schroeder’s
International Boat Show pursuit race held on Royal Ovingtonsia
Dock.
To say that sailing conditions were difficult
may be considered by most to be an under estimate, with
predominantly light winds interspersed with flat wiring
conditions where the wind funneled through the surrounding
buildings.
Never the less, a good number of entries
lined up, and the Musto Performance Skiff supporters
club took to the elevated walkway over the dock to watch
Richard Stenhouse’s progress.
Sten got off to a flying start on the
first lap, pulling out a good deal of distance on boats
that started around his time, and overtaking boats in
front. On the second lap, things didn't’t go quiet so
well, but he continued to make steady progress.
It soon became clear that the conditions
were to favour the earlier starters, but Sten battled
hard to pull through all but two of the high performance
classes, to finish just behind the Laser 4000 and a
well sailed RS600.
It was also noted by many spectators that
the Musto Performance Skiff finished almost a lap in
front of the other single handed asymmetric classes
taking part.
Many thanks to Richard for braving the
conditions, and a big thanks to all those who came to
cheer him on, especially Pablo and Maria, who came over
from Spain and appeared to have bought up half of the
boat show.
Although Sten admitted to being exhausted
he did manage to get around in one piece, which is more
than can be said for Tim, Rick, John Hayes ( MD of Yachts
and Yachting, and yours truly) who had a minor incident
whilst competing in the Berkeley Marine Exhibitors Challenge
First Class 8 metre racing earlier in the week. No doubt
you will all hear later !
