UK National Championships,
Sunderland YC, UK

I’m sure you all know by now that the 2004 musto skiff nationals
will be held at Sunderland yacht club on the 27, 28, 29, 30, August.
We up north intend to make this the biggest and best Musto Skiff
event there has been in the UK so far.
All we ask of you is that you ALL come. That includes all the
sailors that live outside the UK. There is a ferry terminal at North
shields on the river Tyne. You have easy access and no excuse.
The Yacht club at Sunderland is very impressive. It was built about
five years ago with the aid of a lottery grant. I have been to many
sailing clubs throughout the country and Sunderland ranks as one of
the best you can find. The launching is right outside the club
gates down a good concrete slip way onto a flat sandy beach.
None of this heaving your boats up gravel like some places I can
think of.
The sailing will speak for itself. You launch in safety inside the
harbour then after a short sail you are on the open sea. Most of the
time we sail on fairly flat water with the prevailing wind being
South West, but some times we can have wind more cross or on shore
which gives a nice swell.
We are sharing the event with the yachts from the North East.
(Event. Not course) This will make the event a real stormer
socially. I have done the yacht event a few times myself and there
have always been some nights to remember (or not remember.) There
will be bands and disco’s good food and the friendliest people you
can meet. We have a local brewery who is sponsoring the event so
there will be plenty of CHEAP beer and some FREE.
As far as the local area goes there is a huge selection of things to
do with fun parks great pubs and good restaurants, if that’s what
you are after. There are plenty of places to stay with B+B’s hotels
and self catering places right along the sea front close to the
sailing club. I have a list from the tourist information above.
We
are holding the Sunderland dinghy regatta the weekend before the
nationals so if anyone wants to come to that, practice and leave
your boats, then you are welcome. (I’m sure the Stens will be
there.)
We spend our whole lives travelling down to you guy’s and we know
that if you make the trip you will not be disappointed. You will
only need one day off work and you will get some of the best racing
possible.
A lot of people up here are putting in a lot of work to make this
event a success.
Just be there.
See you at Sunderland.
Kev Anderson.
