Imitation is the greatest form of flattery

When Pat Clear was looking for inspiration to produce the ultimate radio controlled sailing boat it made perfect sense to base it on the ultimate single-handed sailing dinghy, the Musto Performance Skiff.

The model is quarter scale with the hull and deck lines as per the drawings kindly supplied by Dr. Harpprecht. As you will see some minor modifications have been carried out on the rig which has just a backstay to adjust mast bend and the rack which is wider with closed in sections between the outer tubes and the deck. The rack modifications have been incorporated to enhance the righting characteristics, although the model may be built as per the full size if desired using a slightly heavier on board battery pack. Unlike other model yachts the boat carries no keel ballast. Using a unique mechanism the weighted crewman may be moved about the boat, supplying the balance required and also being employed to right it following any capsize.
The model is very agile, it moves effortlessly over the water,accelerates quickly, tacks well and despite not having a gennaker, planes on downwind runs almost taking off in the right conditions.
It is easy to learn to sail in light airs, requires skill to sail well in stronger winds but above all is great fun.
