Re: New SUI website
John
A university graduate carried out an engineering exercise on foiling a Musto.
There are a number of issues.
1. The rudder would need mounting on a gantry well aft of its current position to balance correctly.
2. You'd need to take the spinnaker off, as the apparent wind would be too far forward for a spinnaker as deep as ours to be usable. Note, in the upper wind speeds, the spinnaker already starts to stall, so it's right on the limit at the speeds we're already sailing at. Of course the sail could have been designed to be more efficient at these upper limits but it wouldn't provide such good light airs performance.
3. All these foiling boats still have a high level of aerodynamic drag which needs addressing as the designs develop to improve speed further.

Re: New SUI website
if a laser can fly, any boat can fly!
as long as it feels like flying the musto is fine for me!

Re: New SUI website
Nic, you've seen a laser fly? In some other way than dropping from a height?!

Re: New SUI website
John, yes, they actually have a bolt on foiling kit for a Laser.
I'm not sure what it's performance is like though, although I expect it reaches just fine...
