I was there in the 8's too, and whilst I'm definitely not front of fleet material, if we could tag onto the Riva Cup I'll be there! Riva is just an amazing place to be, and I can't wait to get back! The racing if it's breezy can be challenging, but the first couple of days this year were only 16-20kts and they would have been easily manageable.

The 505's at this years riva cup had the ora breeze and it blew dogs off chains, but the two years previous it was fairly light (still generally blowing southerly from memory, but max 12kts), so it's definitely not always 25+kts. Also as someone previously pointed out; the water is much less crowded in may!

I sailed at malcesine a few years ago and my experience was pretty much the same as riva in terms of breeze and setting, just without the 'sailor' atmosphere post sailing, which I think is half the charm!

I have sailed at riva quite a few times now, and they always seem to have the shore side operations sorted; I can't see them struggling to come up with a plan to safely recover a fleet of musto's.

Keep us informed of how plans progress.

Hi Rick, I've read your message only now. I will ask to some friends of mine for suggestions if you like and a friend of mine sails his 49er at Circolo Vela Arco. All the 49er sailors I know at my sailing club have sailed at many different sailing clubs in Garda so I can ask for the best advice as the 49er is pretty similar to our boat and is likely to have the same problem with strong wind.

I will answer you as soon as I get reliable information!

Cheers,

Edoardo

I sailed out of Malcesine the weekend before the RS800's kicked-off, we certainly wouldn't have been short of breeze, and as many have noted, the club is far better than Riva.
Rick, the voice or reason, the Ora was more than a bit funky...

Would it be worth considering Garda then Como back to back weekends early season (Eduardo when will the skiff festival be next year?) so those that want to can make a week of it?

Hi John,

Usually the Skiffestival is later, on June (end of June). This year it was when we were in Weymouth....Obviuously my sailing club could host you for a training week or week end. The wind is not so strong as in Garda but we may have the chance to have some assistance (ribs, marks...) and those who have already been there know that launching and landing is super safe!!!!

However, I will ask also to Malcesine sailing club. I think that in that period (Easter) it won't be so busy. I agree with John that Malcesine would be the best place for us :)

Regards,

Edoardo

Isn't the Riva Cup an established event that people were looking at joining onto?

I did suggest Riva Cup as a good event for the class to tag onto, but if Edoardo can put together a plan for Malcesine as the host club I'd have no problem with that either.

That said, I wonder if a May event would be better attended than a June event, just because it's less likely to clash with other events in the busy part of the season.

Good to see there's so much interest in going to Garda on a regular basis.

Andy

Count me in for a May EuroCup style event at Riva - it sounds awesome!

Rick,

I talked to some friends of mine that have good contacts at the sailing clubs near Riva del Garda. In particular I was suggested to ask to the new sailing club in Campione del Garda, which seems to have a large ramp (access) to the water (really comfortable with every condition and wind direction) and many new facilities.

Another option could be the Circolo Vela Arco, where a frind of mine keeps his 49er.

Could you please give me an approximate number of people interested and the maximum amount you would like to spend just for the stay at the sailing club? Then I need an hypothetical date and an approximate number of days we would like to stay there. With these essential information I will be then able to get some estimate of costs from all the sailing club.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Best regards,

Edoardo

Edoardo,

All I know is what is on this thread, until we do the survey.

I think what people were interested in was adding an MPS start to the existing Riva Cup rather than creating a new event ...

Re: Garda vs Dongo?

Hello

I asked several swiss sailors about the subject Garda 2013.
Everyone said that Garda would be cool but hey, we have Dongo!

The swiss fleet realy enjoys the Dongo Skiff Festival.
Every year at least 10 swiss boats drive down (~4hrs from Zurich) to Lago di Como to sail during the event.

I agree that Garda would be great for a championship, more than a weekend.
But for a weekend regatta?

I only know the wind conditions for the last two years:
2011
Friday wind 3bf
Saturday no wind
Sunday no wind
Monday wind 5bf
2012
Friday wind 3bf
Saturday wind 3-4bf
Sunday 4-5bf

Have a nice day, Nicolas

Yes, last outing Sunday was quite punchy, while I wimped-out as I'd already sold the boat I watched the runners & riders doing capsize drills, turned-out good practice for Weymouth!

Rick was mentioning the survey above. There was no question on the riva cup after all, right?

As Nicolas says, maybe Garda would just spread us too thinly and anyone up for an Italian event with thermal breeze can do Dongo?
