Gybing videos

Postby campervan » Sun Dec 18, 2016 12:59 pm

Spent 15 mins yesterday looking at various gybing videos and thought it would be worth collating them.
Theres a fair bit out there now, with easier access to cameras.

So, gybing videos I have found helpful (in addition to Stens DVD) are

Ian Renilson, great set up, consistent footwork, weight sitting onto rack, about 10-15 knots maybe?

Interesting to contrast with Jamie last weekend, similar wind,

Heres Stens bit:

Now its getting windier:
Theres really interesting stuff from Iver in heavy winds certainly less forgiving- ? flat water. Nifty feetwork, fast across the boat.

And heres someone making it look awfully easy doing a safety gybe, with a big heave.
Not sure if he is much use this lad by the look af this gybe

Some really rubbish sailor, trying to get the gybe in, but primary problem is not getting across the boat fast enough ( and keeping the boat flat)

Happy for other folk to chip in with examples.

Some of my failures, may add to the collective knowledge of not great ways to do it.

Weirdly back in Garda I had an effective if not stunningly gybe, but seem to have completely forgotten it since :-(.

Like for a stroke in tennis or golf, the footwork is the key also in a gybe.

The sitting down after the gybe I believe is key to
1) pop the battens in low wind
2) have a secure position to steer in all sorts of conditions
3) not fall out the back...

I do the same footwork in all conditions, and in all circumstances, one or two sail gybe. That is the one constant in my gybes I can rely on, many other things can change

When I set out with this footwork I practiced doing it reliably with single sail gybes which I would also recommend to anyone.

Iver, I agree with you the exit is good if able on the rack.

Jono has high risk but fast technique of getting out on the wire.
