Main sheet take-up

Just wondering how the people on here that use a mainsheet clip have the mainsheet takeup attached to the boat?

I've always had mine fed back to under the main block, but I've recently been trying it fed to a ring on the back of the boat to separate the different ends of the sheet. Pro's and cons to both I think.

Hi There,

I organised a system last year, after the Perth Worlds, when I was introduced the idea of having a clip on my harness for the main sheet.

I have a piece of bungy that goes between the two main sheet bridle saddles and has a ring in the centre of it. So the tail goes through this ring then up along the starboard side of the boat by the keel spine. At the end I have spliced in a piece of shock cord that goes up to a pulley on the bow, back to a pulley on the back of the prod, then back up to the bow again.

It took a while to get the sheet length correct, too long and you tangle in it. I found that if it went to the back of the boat, then I tended to either stand on it or get it wrapped around my foot.

The bungy system that I describe above means that when you go downwind and need a bit more main sheet as you are right out the back of the boat, you have another couple of metres before the bungy takes up.

Hope that helps,

Can you tell me how long your mainsheet is and how long the bungy is? Also, how did you spice bungy into the mainsheet? I have looked online about this kind of spice and cannot find anything.

THanks,

Hi John,

If you can international order from Rope4boats.co.uk then Ian makes a great ready spliced, dual colour mainsheet with bungee attached. Not sure how he manages as you can't independently go and buy parts separately for sale money. Given exchanges rates for you it should be super good value.

Mark,
Thanks for the input. I will probably order one and also see if I can copy it for now.

Only two times out on the new boat and both in lightish winds (0-3 and 4-7). Learning a lot! Sore as hell.
