Lookes like a hole in the head crane is not good idea as mine broke in a force 5 to 6 at carsington. It went with a right bang then the main started to drop down, do ovingtons supply the crane without the hole if asked too?

Chris

You'd need to contact Ovington on that.

Have you seen Justo's idea on p.5 of this thread?

Hi There,

Reviving and old thread here, but I have just taken delivery of my new top section with a newer version of the masthead crane on it than on my old boat. Is the best solution to this do still as per Page 5 with what is essentially a dyneema soft shackle holding the dead end of the halyard onto the top surface of the crane?

I was puzzled about the new design, but saw the note of the evolution page when I got home, but saw the comments about the chafing being an issue.

So I am wondering which way I should rig my boat up?

Justo's solution looks good although I haven't tried it myself. I believe the general consensus is to use dyneema as it is very good at coping with abrasion. I put a dyneema sleeve (5mm D12, I think) around 100mm long over the top of the halyard and the do a half hitch around the top of the crane.

I've tried using same setup as Juno's however it was not working for me as well as for him :(

Serena, what you mean when you say it don’t work? The diners breaks? I have been using it for one year, from Palma Worlds, and didn’t change it jet. Still like first day. All of us that have the new stile head crane are using this system.
Maybe you didn’t make it right

Hi Justo,

I tried it as well as liked the idea. But wore the halyard very quickly.

Hi Justo, if it works for you and not for us there must be some difference in the way we are using it, but I am not sure what this difference would be.

I have never tried Justo's method, but it might be worth checking that your crane doesn't have an sharp edges, as they seem to vary. Check the flange (just where the crane goes into the mast), as one of my masts was very sharp there and if yours is, it doesn't matter how you tie the halyard it will always wear.
