Outhaul Cleat

Folks,
My outhaul has been slipping and so I need to replace the cleat.
Has anybody else experienced this?

Also, I think I read somewhere that the cleat can be moved closer to the gooseneck end.
What is the ruling on this?
What is the advantage of doing this? Is it so it's closer to the boat's centre line and therefore easier to adjust?

I also heard some are using additional blocks to lead the control for the outhaul out to the racks.
Am I right in saying that we are not allowed to add addtional cleats? Assuming this is the case, I assume the only advantage of doing this is to be able to pull on the outhaul from the rack?

Hope someone can help.
Cheers

Besty,

I have replaced my outhaul cleat...

Drill off old rivet heads and punch rivets through;
Paint boom with yellow insulating paste (can't remember trade name);
Rivet new cleat on (useful trick, put 2 M5 nuts on rivet in order to place pressure on the rivet head 'inside' the cleat) (this space is too narrow for the rivet gun).

I don't know why the cleat has moved forward, although I understand it was at the request of the class, so there must be some rationale behind it. I think you are correct when you say that the new rules allow you to pull the outhaul on from the wings, but no extra cleats are allowed so you have to reach in to let it off.

The yellow paste is called Duralec (Not sure of the spelling) On my boat, GBR147, the outhaul cleat is held in place by self tapping screws, if your's is a similar age and has srews, undo them very carefully so that you can reuse the same screw holes. The corrosion of the alloy meeting Carbon caused one of the threads to not hold as well as it should.

Regarding the ruling on moving the cleat. It can be in one of two places supplied by the manufacturer. It sounds like yours is in the middle.

All the advise above is sound (especially Dan's comment on using two M5 nuts so the rivet gun can fully collapse the rivet :P )

I'd also recommend you use rivets rather than screws.

The fixing holes in the carbon will not have got bigger due to electolysis, it will be the aluminim cleat that will corrode. I'd suggest the screw fixings have simply worked loose from vibration, hence why I'd use rivets.

Using Duralac is also good, as it seperates the cleat from the carbon.

Hi guys,

im about to swap my outhaul cleat out as the current one is slowly dissolving.

Just wanted to check that these rivets would be suitable for attaching the new cleat to the boom?

Many thanks,

My outhaul cleat (on RUS 479) is not working already - it does not hold the rope because its teeth are already erased. So, I have to change it. What is the correct part number of this outhaul cleat ? Is it SELDEN Valley 432-013 (27 mm hole spacing) ? http://www.seldenmast.com/en/products/l ... 2-013.html
If OK, then where can I buy it (which internet-shop) ?

The cleat is Clamcleat CL211 mk2 and can be purchased from most online chandleries. The Selden product you have linked to is simply a re-branded version.
I would recommend the hard anodised version rather than the silver powder coated version

Thank you very much, Paul ! It appeared so easy :D ... I noticed “Selden” logo on the side of this cleat and tried to find it (using Selden numbers/classification) anywhere using google - I was greatly surprised that no any web-shop or any other company was selling it. I also asked Ovington people - but without success ... . Thanks again !
