Some interesting points being teased out here and a rules bug to fix.

At a worlds Paul and I carry spares on the media RIB. We are not part of the race offices fleet and so are free to service the fleet.

On a breezy day we can often spend all the time between races helping people with running repairs and replacing broken bits including extensions.

Between races the race officers ribs are usually busy course setting.

In races where the class media rib is not available I’d favour carrying your own spares including an extension but there is nothing to stop you putting your spare in the organisers rib but you can’t guarantee they will be on hand should you need them, they may get allocated to laying the windward mark.

Note the class rules about personal support craft.

I'm with Paul Molesworth on this one. We should be self sufficient, it's impossible for ribs to service the whole fleet and breaking an extension is something that you should be able to recover from yourself. As Paul alludes to, what about outside assistance rules? Is it fair that the rescue boats / support ribs carry spares, runs out and then some can race and others not?

Pretty clear to me, rule change to allow spare to be carried and attached to boat by any means which does not include fixings through the skin of the hull / deck or modification of spinnaker chute. This will then mean that the onus on the individual and any spares carried on rescue boats should be made clear to only be available as an emergency measure and the person must return to shore and fit their own spare if they want to continue racing.

I know it sounds a bit harsh but I think it's the only fair way to do it...

Cheers

Graeme

I'm not sure we want to get to a state where we don't help people out to allow them to continue racing.

Paul & I have fixed people up to allow them to continue racing at a worlds on numerous occasions; I don't think we'd be happy to sit there and send people ashore with our arms folded ... that isn't in the spirit of things. We help those who need it and as we are not part of the race team we are like a neutral service RIB. Typically we are able to address most issues that can crop up on the water between races.

That said; as I have stated above people should carry their own spare; but there have been examples of sailors who have broken two in a day ... better they are helped to participate in the next race than sent ashore.
