Anodising Rig components

The anodising and the anodising dye on a number of rig components on my boat has worn away and/or degraded due to UV. In particular, on the spreaders, the bottle screws (old style spreader adjustments), vang lever, vang arms and tiller.

I'd like to re-anodise and re-dye these components to protect them. They are all different colours: spreaders were blue, bottle screws pink, vang components black and tiller (possibly) grey ( hard to tell as it is so faded)

There doesn't appear to be any mention of coating or recoating of these components under the repair section of the rules.

In each case, I think it will be necessary to anodise the whole component rather than part due to the process required.

Can I do it under the rules? And if I do, can I change the colour (e.g. Make them all black)?

Thanks,

Sandy

That's a good question!

I'll ask and come back.

We have some practical concerns about re-anodising of parts. From past experience the anodising process may cause more damage to the parts than leaving them as they are.

The process will involve the parts being stripped in typically a very aggressive acid. This works more or less OK on new parts, but the process typically attacks any area that has suffered from eloctrolysis, which often exposes a lot of voids on the surface. The anodising process will then work, but obviously won't fill in the electrolysis area.

Because of this if the parts are old the outcome may not be that great.

At some point, you just have to accept that something is worn out. The parts on the Musto Skiff are very resilient and the running costs are very low. Also, these parts are not particularly expensive and I am not sure how much you would save re-anodising existing parts.

If there was a general view within the class that it wanted to permit re-anodising, rule 6.1.4 (a) would need to be slightly amended. This would not be a problem, as World Sailing need to approve the proposed rules and are likely to want small edits too. However, I would welcome feedback before we do this.

Providing Paul the class would like the new rules as it was a class vote
