For clarification, the logo position is controlled by the Racing Rules of Sailing.

This particular point is a very good example of why the technical committee headed by David has been diligently updating the class rules and to make them clearer.

There are many rules that the class must comply with and are not simply being awkward and the rule updates are in an attempt to ensure rule compliance so sailors do not find themselves to have broken a rule that requires them to put their boat right. Sometimes these only ever arising at equipment inspection immediately prior to a major championships.

There is a process for requesting a trial, as has been recently followed by two sailors looking to promote a World ranking as their sail number. It's a simple process.

I think it is clear that the Musto logo panel should be left alone, they do sponsor the class as we all know so we should give them the freedom to have a panel on the sail to put their logo on.

As for the class flag in general, I think two further options can be considered:
- 1st off if it does fit in the very top section it could work, worth a sketch or something, then we can maybe get it put in the rules.
- Other option is at present I would argue you have the whole sponsor logo area on the sail to use. Yes the rules limit the size of the National flag but why not say you are sponsored by a country (which you are, the UK provides you a venue and opportunity to sail.....) Yes we need an area for the event sponsor sticker on the main but at present this is not specified in the rules (although it should be)

There is currently a submission at the World Sailing Conference requesting that an event logo position and size be permitted in the Racing Rules of Sailing and I'll advise when I hear the result.

As I say, knew it was missing. :-) Should we not have this on the new rules currently being reviewed?

As a class, we can only add it if it gets passed by World Sailing. They have to approve first :D

Got to follow the processes Paul :D :D

Proposal to put a national flag on the sail

To be honest

I think the musto panel should be left alone I will be sticking my union flag at the very top of the sail think it will look good

I don't think this whole national flag sticker Is important at all however would it be made a rule that you have to carry your national flag at an event? (I don't think it should) If so I think £58 is massively on the steep side for a sticker of this size.

Dan, read the proposed rules and you will be able to come back here and answer your own question ...

So it may be made mandatory at events. So the class technical committee are proposing to make people spend £58 on a national flag that you have to purchase from 1 source.

The key word is may, not shall.

The £58 figures is for a full panel decal used on the 49er, the suggested decal with be much cheaper.

It is worth noting that these rules are proposals to the class. In this particular case the technical committee have been asked by sailors to include national flags on mainsails in a similar way to the 49er etc, so we decided to ensure the sails looked consistent it would be a good idea to specify the size and position of a national flag, rather than allowing it to evolve haphazardly.

Currently there is no provision to add a national flag in the class rules, so unless the event specifically requires it you cannot. As many sailors carry the flags left over from previous events it seemed people generally liked the idea.

If the class don't want to do it then we can remove it from the proposed rules and just accept that at some events national flags may be required and then removed afterwards.

So scanning the pics from the worlds I see barely anyone with a flag also no gold silver or bronze stickers on the head of the sail
Does this mean I can have my union flag at the head as no one else seems to be using it :-)

Jason, I think you already know the answer to that :D

But for the avoidance of doubt, read the class rules.
