Hi Jason

If the repair is to more than 5% or could affect the shape of the sail it must (i) be reported to the Class Association, and (ii) must be repaired by Hyde or another sailmaker authorised by the Class Association. We don't want people using "repair" as an excuse to change their sail shape.

Right so if my insurance company tell me I have to get my sail repaired by a company that is 1 not recognised by the association and 2 not hydes ? Then what ? My perfectaly good main is now not class recognised ?
i assume the class will be ringing around to make insurance company's aware of this and explain ?

We are suggesting that if the damage is either of the two mentioned by David that you advise the class of the damage and who will carry out the work, so we can ensure a consistency.
Please consider that 5% is around 0.5sqm of the mainsail which is a pretty big hole.

The same would basically apply to foils and hulls. Damage to a foil of over 5% or a hole in the hull of that size is a big bit of damage.

It's worth noting that a number of classes have already adopted this, some require all damage to be notified to the class before a repair is carried out...

Jason, sorry but I've read David's replies to your posts several times and I believe he has fully answered your questions.
If there is a point / points that you still feel is unclear can you list them and we will try to explain.

It does not currently say this in your rule regarding this

we have clarified the rule in light of Dan's question. I think that the remainder of the "repair" rule is clear but I am happy to answer any specific questions or make clarification where needed

Following the feedback on this topic there has been some revisions and a v6.6. is now available for review and comment here:

Hi David,

Thanks for all your work on this/ Here are my comments based on v6.6

C.2.2 MEMBERSHIP To be eligible to compete in all international events and national championships the crew must be a current member of the ICA.
shouldn't this have the same wording as B.2.1. e.g. ... shall be a current member of their NCA, or ICA where no NCA is in place.

C3.2 (b) A crew’s clothing, headwear and footwear shall not weigh more than 10 kilograms, excluding a trapeze harness and any helmet. A trapeze harness shall have positive buoyancy and shall not weigh more than 3 kilograms. Any helmet shall not weigh more than 2kg. This is a variation of the ERS

Do you not need to specify that the weigh more than 10 kilograms (and 3kg for trapeze harness) is done in accordance Appendix H, otherwise it becomes vague as to whether this is dry weight or not?

C.6.1.2 Fairing of the hull, hull appendages, sails or any other Originally Supplied equipment other than as specifically permitted in these Class Rules is prohibited.C.6.1.3.
Is the C.6.1.3. at the end of the sentence just a typo?

C6.1.3 (b) Lubricant on fittings, mast join, mast collar, gooseneck, gooseneck pulleys, boom end (to enable the clew strap to slide more easily); boom end pulley, mast track, and sail (only in the direct vicinity of the tell-tales) only; it shall not be used on the hull or hull appendages.

What about bowsprit and spinnaker throat? It helps to hoist and retrieve the kite.

C6.1.3 (o) (f) as a tie for covers to hold them in place temporarily
It is not clear to me what "covers" are in this context. What is this allowing us to do?

C6.1.3 (w) the top back edge and/or bottom outside edge of the stainless cassette of the spinnaker halyard exit block at the base of the mast may be filed to the extent necessary so that the halyard does not rub against that edge in use
I normally just bend the inner lip down to stop it rubbing. Can we add that?

C6.1.3 (r) Protective coverings over and on (i) fittings ...
Does this include putting some epoxy on the ends of machine screws to protect yourself? I normally do this for the machine screws (not the heads) on the gudgeon, otherwise you tend to take off skin from your knuckles when you remove the bung.

C6.1.4 (d) The breather in the centre of the plinth, and drainage holes shall all remain open, operational, and unrestricted.
I build a cowling out of tape around the breather to try and re-direct the water over it (it is still open to air). This was allowed under the old rules as it is just tape. My interpretation as this would be considered a restriction. Can this be amended to allow this?

C6.1.5 REPAIR
What happens to boats that have already been repaired prior to these rules being put in place?

C8.1
(g) It is not permitted to vary the designed chord width, profile or shape of either the rudder or the daggerboard from that Originally Supplied
(h) The leading edge of each foil below the hull or stock may be sanded, filled and/or painted provided that such work shall not extend more than 20mm aft of the leading edge.
(i) The trailing edge of each foil may be sanded, filled and/or painted provided that such work shall not extend more than 3mm from the rear edge.

g seems to contradict h and i. Why should h and i be allowed? What about when I have to scratches in the middle of the foils, if h and i are meant to mean I can't repair the middle of the foil. This happens to me every few years, presumably when a tiny stone or some sand gets between the foils and the padding. Pulling the board up or down puts long scratches into it.

C9.7 (4) Protective coverings of any material over exposed fittings and standing rigging are permitted. Such coverings shall not alter the function of the fitting. Any covering over standing rigging shall be tubular shaped no longer than 1.5meters in length on any shroud and no more than 25mm in diameter.
Does tubular imply round? I use a braided cable sleeve (e.g. http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/cable-sleeves/1874650/ ), that is not a rigid round shape. If concertinaed it could probably get to 50mm in diameter, but is not more than 25mm when fixed in place while racing. Is that allowed under these rules?

Can anyone clarify what Bruce has asked ?

I feel the class has put the class survey out asking if we would like to vote in the new rules but they are so grey no one really knows what the rules mean so they don't really know what they are voting for much like the brexit vote :)

There is a set procedure for asking for a rule interpretation.

You write to the class secretary referencing the particular rule you would like interpreted and this gets sent to the class technical committee. If the technical committee require addition advise they will contact World Sailing.

When the technical committee have the interpretation it gets posted here viewforum.php?f=35 as a class rule official interpretation with a reference number.

Hi Paul,

My comments weren't based on the current class rules but on the proposed class rules, so how should get these clarified? Or are these now the class rules?

Bruce these are not the class rules

In the survey we are asked if we want to vote them in or leave as they are

These are only proposed rules

Jason - the proposed class rules cover the sails as far as I can see.
If you think there is something missing you'll need to be specific please.
