C.7.2 (2) relating to Replacement fittings

Hello All.

I have a questions relating to the below rule:
C.7.2 FITTINGS
(2) Cleats, blocks and fittings supplied by any manufacturer may be
replaced in the same position as the standard fitting or as close as
structurally possible. Replacement cleats shall be substantially the
same size and design. Replacement blocks shall have the same
number of sheaves of a similar diameter.

Are able to replace blocks with the below:

Thanks

Thor

Hi Thor, thanks for the email regarding Antal rings. The rule states you can change blocks for any make with a similar size sheave. The main word here is block which is classed as a housing holding either a pulley or a sheave therefore, the Antal rings are not actually a block, but a pulley or sheave, which is not the same, so is not allowed.
Just to let you know, we have tried using these Antal rings on a Musto, in place of blocks, but were found to have higher friction loads than the supplied blocks, and made sailing harder work, so I would not recommend them anyway.
I hope this answers your question.
Regards
Chris Henderson

Hi, i am using 6mm spinnaker sheet and can see harken rachet 55 are so big, for this diameter. Can I use harken rachet 40? Can be considered similar diameter?
Thanks

Doesn't everyone use 6mm kite sheets?

I believe 6mm is the standard and works well with the supplied ratchets.

I would consider similar size to be within 3mm as this is the difference in sheave size between all the major manufacturers so a difference of 15mm is in my opinion not of a similar size so would not be allowed. Chris

I think the original holt and then ronstan ratchet blocks where smaller diameter.
with a smaller ratchet block you eat through gloves worth upgrading to the harken ones / similar larger diameter
to save money on gloves.

The originally supplied Holt Allen auto ratchet blocks were 52mm.

The fit out was then changed to Harken and these are 57mm. This is the auto ratchet block now being supplied.

Ronstan currently produce a 55mm auto ratchet block.

Allen currently still produce the 52mm auto ratchet block.

I think that needs updating. The boats come with 7mm or 8mm these days (Excel Fusion, I think), which is what many seem to use.

I will check what is standard currently. 6mm is more that enough IMHO.

I prefer 7mm if i'm honest (although i have a double taper), but then I use the smaller 40mm Ronstan ratchet blocks, better to stand on and almost half the price of the Harken ones.

In response to Chris - when i asked about this in the past it was allowed (i emailed you about it) as it performs a similar function, i was just told to expect higher loads but if i could cope with that then fine. Your thought at the time was "I dont feel you are gaining any advantage at all so I dont have a problem but think you may find in a good blow that you had stayed with the bigger blocks so maybe spending a little more money would prove in the end to have been a good move"

In response to Sten - if you use the rubberized grip gloves i think its the kite halyard that shreds these more. I switched to the Gill Pro ones and they have been bullet proof, easily half a season a pair

Thanks Bruce; this has now been updated.

Reference the discussion on 'similar' diameter blocks, can I suggest we add this to an agenda for a skippers meeting and then go forward with any necessary changes?

Personally, I think the word 'similar' is open to interpretation and cannot be measured.

Perhaps we should consider:

1. Having a +/- tolerance from the standard supplied block
2. Quantifying what 'similar' is
3. Other

I'd like a pretty quick response to this as i want to know if i need to now go a needlessly replace my blocks before Garda or risk not measuring.

Mark I suggest you need to drop Chris a mail to confirm.

I've mailed ISAF to enquire if there is a current interpretation of 'similar' as other classes use this.

As mentioned above, in my opinion if it isn't clear the class would be better to discuss how to make it clear and Riva would seem a good gathering of minds.
