C9.8 A 3-4 Trapeze Elastic

(3) The trapeze elastic arrangement is unrestricted except the takeaway
point on the wing is limited to:
(i) An exit hole within the wing at a point 845mm aft of the
front of the wing.
(ii) From the s/s becket supplied for the vang and downhaul take
up pulleys
Musto Performance Skiff Class Rules 2013 v.4.5
10
(iii) An additional position using an s/s becket a maximum of
290mm aft of the front of the wing.
(4) Where the trapeze elastic is led externally as in (ii) and (iii) above, a
substitute elastic shall be fitted from the plastic wing end lug to the
becket located next to the forestay bridge.

Are you allowed to run a seperate elastic from a block on the wing where the kicker and cunno blocks are to a block on the spinni throat and back to the other side to act as a trapeze elastic further forward on the wing for light winds?

My understanding was that you could do this as long, as you observe (4).

Thanks

Dan

My reading would be that that would be OK as the rule says it is unrestricted bar the detailed provisos details ...

I'm sure your dad will be along soon to keep us all in line :D

My recollection from Weymouth was that this was OK, as long as you also conformed to rule C.9.8 (a) (4) Where the trapeze elastic is led externally as in (ii) and (iii) above, a substitute elastic shall be fitted from the plastic wing end lug to the becket located next to the forestay bridge.

In other words you need to have an elastic that uses the P clip on the forestay throat to the wing end. This is because it was felt that this elastic formed part of the overall appearance and styling of the boat.
You could go from the P clip up to a block / ring off the forestay U bolt and then back down the other side.

Any other views?

C.9.9 OTHER RIGGING
(a) MODIFICATION, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

(1) The trapeze system, handle and ring are unrestricted. Combined or linked systems are prohibited.
Except that the trapeze elastic takeaway point on the wing is limited to:
(i) An exit hole within the wing at a point 845mm aft of the front of the wing.
(ii) From the s/s becket supplied for the kicking strap and cunningham take up pulleys
(iii) An additional position using an s/s becket a maximum of 290mm aft of the front of the wing.

(2) Where the trapeze elastic is led externally as in (ii) and (iii) above, a substitute elastic shall be fitted from the plastic wing end plug to the becket located next to the forestay bridge.

On reading the rule what would you say?

Hi Rick, suppose it's no legal, but I don't understand very well the rule for my limited English, that it's why I ask.
So, it is not

My reading would be no but I think it would be useful for Chris to comment; I'll email him a link.

Sorry but I don't consider it legal as no where does it allow for velcro strap. Chris

I saw something on some of the Castle Cove boats for the elastic that seems to work very neatly and having tried it i'm pretty happy with how it works.

The trapeze elastic is terminated in a bobble at the front on the wing plug, runs aft inside the wing, through a sheave/ eyelet and then back forward to the normal take off point. The elastic is the same length as if it have gone from the normal take off to the kite throat.

The elastic now to the kite throat is now a separate piece of elastic

System works well and is very simple and helps in light winds trying to get forward and not then trying to get a trapeze hook around your back to hook on.

In terms of the rules i think it meets the rules as i haven't added any take away points to the system, but would like some clarification as if it isn't i will just fit a second external system for lightwinds which seems a little silly.

Hi Mark

Chris is at the ISAF World Games but I'm sure he'll come back when free.

This looks pretty smart to me.

So I am (and others) are clear, do I understand that you can therefore choose to either use the standard position or the front position?

That's the idea either front or standard, personally i would only change between races, i bit like the raising or lowering the handle using a running splice or the 49er style set-up - a certain light sailor reckoned he could change the bungee take off while on the wire but i presume his 3rd hand is more developed than mine

Cheers
