G.4.1.(b) Spinnaker Identification

G.4.1 IDENTIFICATION
(b) The spinnaker may be modified to include cut in graphics which do not
alter the original shape of the sail. The graphics shall not be closer to the
head point or tack point than 800mm, and not closer to the luff, leech or
foot than 600mm.

What is the point of this rule; for simplicity sake and making the equipment inspectors job easier should we not just delete this rule?

Less rules = simplicity = easier = more focus on the sailing = more understanding of the rules that remain

Agreed, it does seem irrelevant.

I think it was originally brought over when we wrote the first set of rules.

If you delete this rule then doesn't it mean that you can't have cut-in graphics? I know there are one or two already out there with these. If the rules don't allow it then you can't do it ...

Having spoken to a few people, it is needed as it controls potential reinforcing, changes to sail shape etc.
As you say, I would assume if the rule was removed completely it would also stop future sails being logoed but that's one for the IM to confirm.

Dont really see a reason to alter this rule, if you dont allow it, it might put potential sailor, and class sponsors off.
there cant be an advantage to having a logo cut in, it must be heavier than a standard sail. Hydes seem to do a good job and sticking to the measurement rules.

Dan

Thanks for your comments.

As i mentioned above, the reason for having the restriction is that it was found in other classes that a sail can have unwanted modifications carried out by having an unrestricted logo.

I agree that it's probably best left as it . By removing the rule we'd not be permitted to have logoed sails which I agree wouldn't be good and is why the rule was put in to start with...

It's also possible that sails have logos added after supply by a 3rd party so you'd need guidance to them as well as Hyde Sails.

I though the suggestion was to allow cut in logos just not bother with any measurement restrictions to make measurement simpler.

Is there really a risk that people would use this to fiddle with kite shapes?

We of course want to see logoed kites and sailors attracting personal sponsors.

I'm only clarifying why the rule was written this way some 10 years ago.

If the sails aren't checked and nobody has a problem, then we can just remove the restrictions...
