Here is where it all went Wrong.

1 Did not mark the kite haliyard and had to go back in the raise the last 20cm.

2 Waiting for the signal to go down wind, I did not notice the large wave behind me , once to the side before bearing away, the wave picked the back of the boat up causing the kite to fill with water on the way up , nose just starting to go down, just managed to save it but the fleet was gone.

3 Never checked the time to the mark on the pin start or committe boat.

4 Never checked the time between marks

5 Never took one tranist all weekend, starts or other.

6 Did not use marks on the main sheet.

7 Boat trim downwind, too far back when the wind dropped.

I need to ask the other half how to mulitask

Hope you all enjoy, sorry Russ ,will try harder next time.

Chris

Russ said good tack. I can do them just not racing and on the lumpy stuff.

Makes complete sense now! I usually consider myself pretty good at deciphering slang but this one got me.

bad tip ... I have only ever broken one mast ... and that was because I was trying to get a spare tiller out of the boom ...

Lee-on-Solent open ... starboard tack into the windward mark; tosser in a keelboat ploughs through the course on port; regardless of my shouting carries on so I have to crash tack resulting ina capsize & broken tiller extension (did I mention I was leading   ).

So ... then as I try to get the spare extension out of the boom the boat turtles, bounces on the chop and snaps the mast on the bottom ... the boat was 2 weeks old ... was I unhappy ... I'll let you guess.

After that I kept the spare till extension stashed under the chute; easy to get out and use should you need to ...

Also I put a bit of 2mm string through the extension so if it does snap the bits are retained and you can actually steer the boat with a broken tiller if it's not too windy ...

"The boat turtles, bounces on the chop and snaps the mast on the bottom"

I know that feeling! :(

Put a line though it so if it snaps then it stays in one bit and you don't lose it. Its a must!

And also slid plastic tube over it and tapped it to the extension at the bottom, so if i snapped it i would slide the tube up and tape it over the break. joinning it back together.

Never had to use it though

The more you prepare for problems the less they happen

What's happening between the 9th and 10th picture ? How did he manage to hook on so fast ?

I couldn't have all my secrets revealed, so I asked Tania to delete the real 10th picture
What is missing is me sitting on the rack, then hooking on, so not that impressive. I use the Wide Trapeze rings (same as Sten), which makes hooking on quicker and more reliable. ( http://www.ldcracingsailboats.co.uk/rs- ... nd-handles )

8)

So you're not tacking the way Sten does, but sitting on the rack ?

I think very few people have mastered RELIABLE wire2wire tacks, even Sten sits when it's lumpy ...

I was talking to Sten about this at Rultand, and he very rarely does wire-to-wire tacks in races. I am not sure if Sten sits on the rack though, as I think he may hook on while standing up, and then goes out (like he does in his gybes on the DVD).

Chris and all

Just a quick one on the spare tiller extension thing. Bad idea keeping it in the boom as Rick will testify to (he broke his rig trying to get it out al LOSSC a few years back)

The best thing to do is have it under the kite sock, I used to attach it to the same eye at the bow that the kite sock and trap elastics attach to with a small loop of elastic tied tightly around the extension tip (a mound of tape on the end of the extension [the non joint end] works well to hold it enough but still allow you to pull it through when needed). The other end is secured to the kite downhaul block with elastic again, looped around the joint.
The best thing about this is that it means your race isn't over as you can get at it easily and you have next to no chance of capsizing. It also keeps the weight out of the boom and therefore off the sail in light airs.

Having used this in anger at Stokes a couple of years back it does work really well, best place for the broken bit is inside the rack tube if you get the chance!

However.....I did come up with a better method but it requires a bit of boatwork to get it done. Make a carbon sleeve over the extension that can be slipped over a break and taped in place (when I get my new boat I'll do a how to thing for the website). Basically I taped a peice of plastic sheeting over the end of the extension then layer 4 sheets of carbon over it, allow to dry and then slip off. Trim the ragged ends off and then you have a tube. This then slides over the extension and is taped in place at the joint end. The key part is to put a length of thin elastic in the extension so that if you break it you don't lose the end, elastic is used instead of rope as it allows a clean break.
When it breaks, slide the tube over the joint and tape in place. This works even better than the other method, I managed to finish a race at the nationals the other year with only one place lost!!

Hope this helps

oooh, I'm eased to read this :D
I'm discovering my Musto since this winter, and as much as I'm mastering wire-to-wire on the ground/in my head, I'm still frequently failing
it on the water... Having watched Sten's DVD, I was assuming it to be the standard way of tacking. It's good to know :)
