If you sold your boat and didn't bring it back would you not get hammered with inport tax or somthing?

I'd love to do an event in Aus - has to be Sydney.

Bit expensive though as I am sure Sarah would want to come.

It would have to be over Xmas so I'd guess no skiing that year ...

Rick,
Hmmm Sydney at Xmas...from personal experience you've got the choice of sharing Sydney Harbour with container ships, passenger ferries which go much, much faster then they should do, the Aus Navy, and every w***ker in Sydney who thinks he knows how to handle a boat (be it cruiser, jet ski or yacht) in about 12 knots of breeze (apart from the 40 knot southerly buster which inevitably comes through at some time during a regatta), or you can sail on Botany Bay (about 10k's south of the Harbour) in a guaranteed 25-30 knots every day. Either venue you can do the Sydney Cosmo thi(u)ng of surfing or cafe in the morning, skiffing in the afternoon, and boozing it up in a warm climate in the evening.
Given that you guys are coming out of a Brit. winter and (perhaps) coming to Aus for the first time, I'd choose Sydney Harbour - especially the Sydney Flying Squadron at Kirribilli - close to accommodation, Ferries for travel, etc etc - (Sorry Jason - he'll probably kill me for saying all this! - there goes any chance of a price discount!)
Helmy
PS at your exchange rateto Aus (approx 0.41), your Sarah could probably go nuts and you wouldn't even notice! If she does go nuts, just leave her behind - how do you think WE all got here in the first place??

Jason,
I see you have given 14's the flick......

What about bringing a boat to the World skiff regatta in Geelong next January, then we can all have a look and compare them.

They look pretty good, when your crew is away chasing girls, you can sail on your own...just no one to blame when things go wrong!

Hi Grant, I tried to get the Musto's in on the event but there was a feeling amongst the traditional skiffs (not the 14's as best I understand) that the event be restricted to those traditional skiffs. I'd love to come down and give you a sail over the January period but I will be in Scotland no doubt fighting to avoid going for a sail with Ian Renilson in a Musto.

I hope you've got them boats now.

Just add water for a truly excellent adventure!

And don't forget to post some pics of you guys in action, with some (no doubt) superb Oz backdrops to make us all envious.

Have a great time with your boats - they're just bonzer!

Attention all Ozzies!

There's a great review of the Musto Skiff in the current issue of 'Australian Sailing' magazine (October 2006) - buy a copy and read all about it.
I think he likes it.
:D
We hope to get permission to publish the article on the web site.

Happy sailing,

Helmy, I can just see you in a Musto, I reckon Meaty should get one as well he wouldn't have to import us pommy crews for your Aussie Nationals in future.
I have taken a break from the 14 this year, its been hard to get motivated when your last event was at Fraser Island.
I picked up my Musto in August, it's certainly the best fun I have had in a long time (in a boat) with similar characteritics to the 14 although I could still do with a crew going through the gybes.
I was going to sell the Musto at the end of the season but have decided to hang on to it as it has been so much fun.
I have been working hard on the manual for ISAF and will be attending the confrence in Halsinki next month so hopefully we will get International status.
I am curretly building a new 14 but am unsure why I am doing it.

Chris.

P.S. The road trailers can be shipped in pieces and simply bolted together.

Hi Chris.
Good to hear from you. Yes Meaty's still at it - since you sailed with him last year he's chopped the back of the boat off, installed the German wind-up foil system, got a new mast, and Glaser sails (a la Howie). Still hasn't won a race...just thrown more money at it, which as we know is the institutionalised manner of doing things in 14's. I've sold my boat and its now in France - you may have heard from Brice as he wants to do the twin tiller thing on it. Geddes is still barely talking to me after I chopped off the foredeck. I'm sailing with Jason King on his new boat, and the Geelong Skiff regatta should be good (12's,14's,16's18's) in January. It weould be a good forum for Musto's.I'm keeping tabs on Jason Beebe, but alas no Musto's in Victoria as yet...LOVE to take one for a sail...SURE you guys don't need a demo boat down south here????

Good work sailing with the builder! That eases up the cash flow a bit to buy your very own MPS!
The Geelong event sounds great, unfortunatly after last years event @ Fraser I have became a Dad in September so the trip down under is off for this year. I will be back.
Brice has been in touch, hopefully sorted him out with what he needs.
Jason has stock boats, give him a call to try to get one done to Victoria.
We are looking to find someone in Victoria to take one on..

Musto Skiff Worlds – 90 Boats – 11 Countries – NO OZZIES!

Hi Lindsay/ Grant/ Helmy/ Random/ et al:

The first ever ISAF-approved Musto Skiff World Championships are at Lake Garda in Italy in just over a week.

There are 90 boats entered from 11 countries, including New Zealand – but NO OZZIES :(

It’s a very long-shot, but is there any chance you (or any other competent & interested skiff-type sailor you know) could get yourself to Italy for the event? We can get a charter boat there for you.

There are two practice days before the main event – and we would make sure you get plenty help to learn to sail the boat.

It’s going to be an incredible event – the only opportunity you will have to be at the first-ever World Championships for this amazing new class.

Further details of the event at:
http://www.mustoskiff.com

Sorry for the late notice, but it's a great opportunity for the right person, and it would really set you up for sailing the boat in Oz :D

Happy sailing,

Ian R

Hi guys.

First of all thanks for your decision to come to Black Rock for the 2010 Worlds. It's a huge committment for you all to come this far, but then I suppose the prospect of escaping the European winter is too good to pass up.
Be warned though - the Club House Manager is looking for a far better performance from the Musto's than the recent Finn Gold Cup. The bar takings were abysmal - bloody athletes!
I don't know how many of you have been to Black Rock - we'll post some photos - but certainly Chris Turner is familiar with the place, so he can give you a rundown.

Secondly I can now post onto the forum with a clear conscience - I picked up my own Musto recently, and am looking forward to adding to our fledgling fleet. This is the last boat to come from the initial container which was sent to Jason Beebe, and I only just managed to snaffle it from some other locals that we've been nurturing. I can see another container being required within weeks.

Jason and (Qld) Chris Turner are planning on coming down to Melbourne in April for a long weekend's sailing, so this will be the first Australia-wide fleet racing that we'll do. Brisbane is about 20 hours drive from Melbourne, so it's a big trip for them.

On another front I need some techo help - I'd post onto the Tech forum, but since I have this running already I'll use this.
My first sail in my new boat was somewhat embarrasing and unsuccessful - I wasn't able to get the rudder blade down at all -the packing in the box was just too thick. After having sailed the first boat we have had down here quite a few times I was quite prepared for the rudder to be a bit stiff in the box, but on my boat it just wasnt going down at all. Luckily there was only Ritchie Robertson around to watch and laugh at me.
Anyway, the rudder box packing has been a problem on all of the Aus boats - are we just unlucky, or is this a common problem with all new Mustos? I note that in the Tech forum there are some threads involving c/board packing and McLube, but I don't think any amount of McLube will help my rudder box packing.
Given that I'm quite short and therefore have limited reach/leverage over the rudder, I think need to do something more serious than McLube.
Should I remove some of the packing?
Should I shave it down? If so what's best to use?

Helmy
