Mast UV damage?

Hello,

I am looking at buying a musto skiff (circa 2005) it has been lightly sailed (not at all for the last 3 or 4) but lived outside in the sun with little attention by the looks of it, It needs a good scrub and most/all of the rigging that wasn't under the cover needs replacing.

I have some concerns about the mast, how badly are they affected by UV damage? I went and looked at the boat yesterday the mast 'looks' fine but to the touch it seems like your feeling the fabric, on my rs600 and my finn these both had a clear lacquer coating the mast, I'm not sure how much this protected against UV. There also appears to be similar feel/damage to the spinnaker pole where it protrudes from under the cover.

thanks
Alex

thanks, I gave that a read but, it didn't really address my concern about it being in the sun without any treatment for approx 6 or 7 years, is it common for people to recoate their masts? If not then its probably fine :)

hi alex

a light rub down then a revarnish will do the trick don't worry about also the spinnaker pole is fibreglass i believe which i didn't know so again a light rub down then a revarnish will bring them back to the former glory

just some key notes

check the bolts under neath the spinnaker chute as i did not check mine was leaking and 2 of the nuts was almost pulled though but don't panic of you find the ovi will send you some washers that do the trick
secondly check the kicker bar for some reason on mine it was i 1 inch to long causing damage to the mast but again easy fix spsrt from that the boats are bullet proof and it does not matter what age it is they are all the same really as i have found out

good luck

thanks I checked the chute bolts, it appears to be the 5 bolt variety and there doesn't seem to be any movement there but there are no washers on the underside or none that i could see, there is some wear top centre of the chute where the halyard has rubbed a groove in. The chainplate fittings look good, there doesn't seem to be any deformation of the lower bracket yet the kicker bracket and gooseneck are metal fittings not plastic. The fur needs replacing and the grip tape on the wings needs doing but generally pretty sound boat.

Couldn't find anything on the website about the rudders falling off, the pins on the rs600 did that a couple of times! So i had good look at the rudder stock.

a light rub down with some wet and dry to remove any loose varnish, don't abrade the carbon on the mast, and then a two pack varnish to recoat them. Two coats and they will look amazing again.

You could do with fitting a new end fitting to the pole though or it will work like a giant apple corer on someone should you have an accident!

Yes ... plus the class rules require that ... safety.

I'd also recommend you buy one of the stainless vang arm adapters for the top of the lever.

It's a simple job to match the holes and cut the arm back. The adaptor provides considerably more wear resistance...

Well, an update, Bought the boat should all be finalised before the end of the week. Managed to get the mast apart after some struggling and water, so first job is to varnish all the sticks!

Where the forestay fits into the mast there is a little bit of damage what looks like crushing/rubbing, is this normal or is there something that can be done to prevent it?

SN is 198 and the boat is located in Vancouver, BC. Another boat for the Pacific NW, but we probably won't be racing over the border this season.

I had a look at the mast again and I'm not really worried about it tbh, its barely damaged imo.

Also, not sure who I should contact or where I should post it but from the email correspondence I had yesterday the US/CAN dealer has changed from what you have on the website.

Gave the boat a good scrub yesterday, looks like a boat again :)

Mast varnished! I ended up using EPIFANES Clear High-Gloss Varnish because nobody had anything in stock that has been recommended here. It said it had high UV protection, what the worst that could happen *cough cough*!

Threaded new halyards and trapeze lines yesterday so the mast is back up, put an order in with ovi this morning for all the little bits and bobs I need.

Who makes the polar bear pubes? I'm sure I read on here somewhere they are made in Canada, so I may be able to find a local supplier.

Who makes pro grip? Nowhere locally stocks it.
