Hi!

I've been sailing a contender for the past couple of years and was lookig for something a bit more exciting downwind. I've heard the MPS is a really good boat and is not so sensitive to lighter weight helms like the contender and RS700! I wondered what the boat was like to sail and how those who sailed contenders previously got on? I'm fully prepared to go through the whole capsizing drill again!

Does ne1 have ne tips when looking at second hand boats (and maybe a bit of history about the class), and also where are the clubs that they are sailed from?! Are there any training w/es run during the year?

Where do you live? The musto is a Great boat to sail and I would like to be 12 stone to enjoy sailing in england in the summer, The Musto is only slightly harder to sail than the 700 but needs less strenth,
The kicker works with little effort and the layout is simple, the only hard part is getting on and off the water without help if you are new to sailing it.

The Musto is a growing class, the price of second hand is so high a lot of sailors go for a new one as you have to work out your sailing costs over a year.
If the second hand price went down a lot more sailors would get one as the cost is keeping sailors out of the class. There was a shortage of second hand boats in the spring and the same might happen again. Some are for sale just to get a new one and may just keep there boat if the price is not right?
You could get a second hand boat that might only cost you £500 a year in real terms, if the price of the new boats goes up this could be less? The new price has been just under £8000 for two years now. The costs to make must have gone up as they are made in the uk to a high standard by Ovington.

The CE mark on the hull give room for 1 HANDBAG as well.

Hi Claudia,

My son sailed the Musto for 3 years @ 58 to 60 kgs. His settings are on the web site. He got on well, but suffered in big seas at Travemunde and the like when you need pure power to punch through the waves. However it balanced out in light airs and flat waters @ Rutland when he could show the current World Champ a clean pair of heals. I know you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for all your replies! I did notice that a second hand MPS seemed a little more dearer then other classes! I'm guessing they're pretty well made! Is there nething major that has gone wrong with the boat? Has Ovington always builts MPS's from the start or was there another builder. If so do they differ slightly?

I'm based at Chichester at the mo, have seen a few Mustos going out from Hayling Island. Good to know there are some settings up on the web, although am a lttle bit heavier the 60 kg (think am 64)!

There are a few little things that have changed, if you get a second hand boat you will always spend a bit on new rope or changing bits for saftey.Has the salt water taken its toll?
If you get a new boat is will cost 0 for the rest of the year and you know you have the latest so you can just play and not bimble. The savings are on the trailer when getting second hand, if you do not travel then you will only need a cover and trolly, beg a lift or borrow a trailer, Rs700 is the same trailer.
I was going to wait till 2009 for a boat but RS have put up their price for the 700 and the Musto is way overdue for a price rise so took the bullet in August, good move, great boat.
Or in real terms the Musto has gone down in price this year as the 700 has stayed the same so far.

i sail a cherub in Western Ausrtralia and im sick of my crews moving onto one designs like 420's and stuff , i was wondering if there are any boats sailed in WA that i could compete against, if no then i am happy to be the first, another thing i was wondering is how long would it take to get a hang of it, i kinda want a boat that will challenge me cos ive been sailing the cherub for one season ( moved out from a flying ant) and i seem t have gotten the hang of it but the crews are a issue so im having second thoughts about it.

I would recommend you speak to Jason Beebe, or Richard Ekberg.

I'm sure they would be able to give you an idea on the nearest boats to you.

As far as learning to sail the boat, you do need to put some time in, and I would very strongly recommend a copy of the Stens DVD on how to sail the boat. There is a great deal of information on the website, and you will find the forum is very active and supportive. Everyone else has been their before, and the fleet is both friendly and helpful.
