Olympic Musto Skiff?

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to start a discussion to see if we (the class) wanted to put our hat in the ring to be considered as the Equipment for the Mens and Womens One Person Dinghy for the Paris 2024 Olympics. According to this post on the World Sailing Web Site, it is up for grabs.

http://www.sailing.org/news/87044.php#.Ww9jyiCxWUk

I do not have knowledge of many of the different boats that you have in Europe, but from what I have seen in NZL, the only boat that I can think of that has a wide competitive weight range is the Musto Skiff.

I have sailed the Tornado Catamaran when it was an Olympic Class, and am sailing a Nacra 17 Catamaran, the current Olympic Catamaran when I am not on my Musto Skiff, so I have a bit of experience with sailing Olympic Classes. There are definite pros and cons, with being an Olympic Class, and I would say that there are probably more cons than pros from my personal view point, but that's just me. I really like the friendly nature of the Musto Skiff Class, and am still sailing the Tornado, which is a lot more relaxed and fun now that it is not an Olympic boat, compared to the earlier days.

So Whadaya Reckin?

The class was born out of the the ISAF brief for new Olympic Equipment:

As ever ISAF did nothing and the Finn remained ... so the class went about it's own business and has grown into a healthy class for amateurs.

If you look at all the performance classes that came out around 2000 most are dead and we are unique in that we continue to grow and can put a decent fleet on the startline at a worlds with a true international mix.

I expect our next two worlds to be 100+ boat events ...

For years we asked the members about their interest in putting the class forwards for OLympic selection in the on-line survey; you can review the responses here: http://www.mustoskiff.com/facts-and-figures.htm

As you can see the interest has faded over the years and sometimes in the comments you'd get very strong opinions that it would be bad for the class.

We didn't ask the question in this years survey as it has really become an irrelevance now; we are healthy and it is hard to see how any involvement with the Olympic would benefit the current members.

I can't really see how we'd fit in with the current event schedule anyway ... and the Finn lobby is so powerful/entrenched it will be there until we die ...

Hi Aaron

An interesting topic.

As I understand it, the only available event that the Musto Skiff could be considered for would be the women's class in the mixed single-handed event (the Finn being retained).

That said, between now and the November conference the relevant different World Sailing committees need to come back with final proposals.

Would be funny to see the girls whizzing about thrashing the men in their slow old heavy tubs ... never gonna happen though ...

My expectation is at the next meeting they will revise the events ... and pick equipment to suit.

As someone who sailed Lasers before they were Olympic I would say no
The class went from a fun (if you like sitting out) class both on and perhaps more importantly off the water.
Bed at nine pm anyone?

Did World Sailing just start the process to select the Musto Skiff as an Olympic class?

Project XS is the reason behind the submission.

It sounds like that idea has been dropped in favour of a mixed keelboat anyway.

Is the proposal for this new smaller sail to be used on the existing mast with shorter foot or a new smaller mast?

Hi Ian

The chairman is working on an interim report which will be posted in the next few days. This should answer yours and other questions regarding the Project XS.
