Winter Weather Clothing

So after a mind-numbingly cold weekend in the UK, it got me thinking I need some serious improvements in my sailing attire ready for the winter months..

This is my first winter in the skiff and a trapeze boat for that matter so would be interested to hear recommendations/pro's and con's

I guess the natural toss-up is between drysuit and winter wetsuit with thermal base layer? I'm naturally drawn towards a wetsuit for the assumed better maneuverability and less 'flappy' feeling..concerned that I may be more exposed to the wind stood on a wire though so may feel the cold more?

Cheers,

nige

Hi
I reccently replaced my drysuit with a Neil Pryde winter wetsuit- long john and top. Think it is the "matrix firewire" . I was a bit sceptical if it would be as good as drysuit in midlle of winter but so far seems great. Air temperature was only 3 degrees at club on the Sunday before last and i was still easily warm enough.

Cheers for the advice guys, I think i'll go for the the layers option under wetsuits -would probably give me more options throughout the seasons and should be a slightly cheaper option too...means I have a little more justification for allowing myself to get a new set of sails

happy sailing all.

I use a good Gill drysuit + teddy bear suit and a wetsuit hat . When the air temp is close to zero and sleeting, I go for a double teddy bear suit which is really warm!! This is born out of necessity as I capsize a lot. :)

I have just bought one of These hybrid drysuits:

After the first sail in very cold conditions I am very impressed with the blend of drysuit and wetsuit: very unobstructed arms, compact suit on the legs, very warm, hard to get legs on and off though!

Get yourself one of these, I can thoroughly recommend them.

http://www.musto.com/waterproof-fleece-lined-cap-ae0080.html;true-navy

I wore these during the Tornado Worlds on Lake Constance in Germany. It was the only thing that kept me warm the the alleged German summer over there this year.

These hats are fully waterproof with a fleece liner and a chin strap. It even stayed on when got hit my a gust and nose dived sending me under water and being dragged along underwater at about 20 knots until the boat slowed down. One of the best bits of sailing kit I own. I will be breaking it out in 3 weeks time when the season opens over here.

Well done Musto for making this awesome product. I was lucky enough to get a bright red one from last seasons batch.
